Summer Preseason I.D.: Catcher Analysis

On May, 12th, Prep Baseball Report held its annual Summer Preseason I.D. - Wisconsin event at STiKS Academy in Waukesha, Wisconsin and today we take a look at the catchers.
Masen Beatty and Colton Toutant both tied for the event-high in exit velocity topping 90 mph from a tee. Beatty (2019) is a athletic left-handed hitting backstop while Toutant (2019) is a right-handed bat with present lower-half strength.
Jonah Wronski, a physically strong sophomore catcher, showed his gap-to-gap line drive abilities during BP as well as earning a second place finish on the exit velocity leaderboards clocking in at 89 mph off a tee.

Masen Beatty, C, Pewaukee, 2019
6-foot-1, 187-pound, left-handed hitting catcher, well-proportioned, athletic frame. At the plate, balanced, even setup, wrap load, short leg kick trigger. Long, level bat path, some uphill lift at times, high finish, line drive abilities, rhythm involved. Present bat speed, exit velocity topped 92 mph from a tee. Defensively, pop times ranged 2.11-2.19. Fluid footwork to a quick, clean transfer, short, loose arm action, gets rid of it, over the top slot. Present arm speed, throws topped 76 mph from the crouch with accuracy. 7.27 runner in the 60.
Christian Pederson, C, Mukwonago, 2020
6-foot-1, 180-pound, right-handed hitting catcher, high-waisted frame. At the plate, balanced setup, back bar load, short stride. Long, steep bat path, flashed some pull side pop. Exit velocity topped 76 mph from a tee. Defensively, pop times ranged 2.68-2.83. Packs at exchange, long, high ¾ slot. Throws topped 65 mph from the crouch. 8.15 runner in the 60.
Cooper Tamblyn, C, Muskego, 2019
6-foot-1, 180-pound, right-handed hitting catcher, athletic frame. At the plate, even, heavy front foot setup, wrap load, short leg lift stride. Long, uphill bat path, loose hands, power/pull type, exit velocity topped 82 mph from a tee. Defensively, pop times ranged 2.36-2.44. Clean exchange, short arm, high ¾ slot, throws topped 72 mph from the crouch. 7.45 runner in the 60.
Colton Toutant, C, Homeschool, 2019
6-foot-1, 190-pound, right-handed hitting catcher, athletic frame, strong legs. At the plate, open stance, closed toe setup, back load, short stride. Short, level path, occasional uphill chop, present bat speed, exit velocity topped 90 mph from a tee. Defensively, pop times ranged 2.18-2.30. Low crouch setup, feet work to second base. Steady hands, short arm action, quickness out front, over the top slot. Throws topped 73 mph from the crouch. 7.82 runner in the 60.
Cody Williams, C/INF/RHP, Mukwonago, 2021
6-foot-1, 155-pound, right-handed hitting multi-positional player, lanky frame. Behind the plate, pop times ranged from 2.33-2.43. Quick feet, gains ground to second. Steady hands, short, loose arm action, high ¾ slot, throws topped 73 mph from the crouch. Similar actions from first base, longer actions, plays through the ball, throws topped 73 mph across. At the plate, balanced, wide setup, back wrap load, high, deliberate leg kick trigger. Loose hands, short, uphill bat path, high finish, favored the opposite field. Exit velocity topped 81 mph from a tee. 7.44 runner in the 60. On the mound, works in line and down the mound, square landing, athleticism in finish. Long, loose arm action, clean high ¾ slot, some effort and rhythm throughout. Fastball flashed run, some tilt, ranged 76-77 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, loopy, 54-60 mph. Changeup played 71-72 mph.
Thomas Ward, C, Waukesha West, 2020
6-foot-2, 195-pound, right-handed hitting catcher, strong, well-proportioned frame. At the plate, balanced setup, smooth load, short toe tap trigger. Loose hands, long, uphill bat path, flashed power/pull type, rhythm involved. Present bat speed, exit velocity topped 87 mph from a tee. Defensively, pop times ranged 2.33-2.46. High setup, long exchange, short, loose arm action, over the top slot, some athleticism out front. Throws topped 72 mph from the crouch. 7.72 runner in the 60.

5-foot-10, 185-pound, right-handed hitting catcher, athletic frame, present lower half strength. At the plate, balanced setup, short stride, smooth back load, maintains rhythm. Short, clean bat path, some natural uphill lift, power/pull type, showed solid contact entire round. Present bat speed, exit velocity topped 89 mph from a tee. Defensively, pop times ranged 2.19-2.28. Fast feet, agile blocks, quick recovery and exchange. Short arm action, over the top slot, some recoil at finish, throws topped 74 mph from the crouch. 7.32 runner in the 60.
