CHICAGO, IL – No. 4 Kimberly opened its season with a 4-1 victory over No. 5 Brother Rice (IL).

Kimberly got on the board in the top of the second inning when Parker Schuh hit and infield single to drive in Drew Johnson, who singled to leadoff the inning. Davis Matz set the tone on the mound for the Papermakers working 3 scoreless innings striking out three.

They added three runs on outfield miscues the rest of the way. Zach Lechnir doubled to start the third and with two away a Danny VandenBoom fly ball dropped allowing Lechnir to score. The Papermakers added two more in the fourth when a two out line drive to right field was dropped.

Kimberly never trailed in the contest and Danny VandenBoom worked the final 1.2 innings to pick up the save. The highlight of the game occurred in the bottom of the seventh when Zach Carney went all the way into the right centerfield gap and laid out full extension for the first out of the inning.

The Papermakers continue their swing through Chicago’s Southside with a game Saturday at Marist and wrap up the trip on Sunday vs. St. Rita.
