No. 11 Appleton North 11, Kaukauna 7

KAUKAUNA, WI – In their first FVA matchup of the year the Appleton North Lightning staved off Kaukauna by a final of 11-7.

The Galloping Ghosts attempted to make things close with a four run rally late in the bottom of the seventh but the Lightning offense was just to much to overcome.

It looked like Appleton North would make it a quick one scoring six runs in the first two innings. UIC commit Connor Rolain delivered the knock out blow to Kaukauna starting pitcher Riley Vandenberg with a line shot two run single to left making the score 6-0 in the second. Kaukauna then went to No. 5 ranked 2015, RHP Dustin Landers. Making the switch from second base Landers was faced with a big task and got out of the inning with a big strikeout and catching Rolain in a first and third rundown.

After Landers kept the Lightning off the scoreboard in the third the Ghosts would scratch their first run of the game when Tanner Helms scored after an infield error.

Appleton North would score four times again in the fourth making it 10-1. Nebraska commit Alex Henwood had a double while Tyce Wheeler and Dan Rothbauer added RBI singles.

In the bottom of the fifth Kaukauna inched closer when senior shortstop Alex Meyerhoffer lifted a two run single to left to tighten the gap to 10-3.

The Ghosts managed to scratch four more runs in their last at bats but it wasn’t enough to over come the deficit losing by a score of 11-7.
