Mequon, WI – Menomonee Falls edged Pewaukee 8-3 in a sloppily played summer baseball state semifinal game to advance to the state championship game against Franklin.
Pewaukee outhit the Indians 5-4 but ultimately shot themselves in the foot with several key errors that they were unable to recover from.
Neither team really threatened to score until the 3rd inning. In the top of the frame, Pewaukee managed to get two runners on base against Falls starter and Illinois commit Ty Weber, but a timely groundout helped Weber escape the jam.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Menomonee Falls broke through for two runs on the back of two key mistakes by Pewaukee. First baseman Patrick Tomforhde was unable to handle a ball hit between first and second which allowed the first run of the game to score, and he followed it up with an off-target throw that brought another run in to score for the Indians.
The Pirates stormed back to take the lead in the top of the 4th inning. A throwing error by Menomonee Falls allowed them to score their first run, which was followed by an RBI single to centerfield by Ryan Mulvey. The Indians’ centerfielder allowed the ball to get past him on the single, which allowed Mulvey to score on the same play and Pewaukee to take a 3-2 lead.
Menomonee Falls had no interest in falling behind, but they didn’t need to worry for very long. They scored six runs in the bottom of the 4th to put the game well under control. Weber had a 2 RBI triple in the outburst, and a dropped fly ball also allowed two runs to score.
Both teams went quietly the rest of the way as the pitching and defenses settled down, and eventually the Indians claimed the victory.
Weber worked five innings for Menomonee Falls and allowed one earned run on four hits and six strikeouts. Brandon Knoke pitched 3.1 innings for Pewaukee and took the loss after giving up two earned runs on two hits and five walks.
Weber went 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs for the Indians, while teammate Matt Emmer was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Matt Clark led Pewaukee with a 2-for-3 performance from the leadoff spot.
Menomonee Falls will square off with Franklin for the state championship at 6:05 tonight at Kapco Park.
