Continuing the coverage of the Madison Preseason I.D. today we break down the outfield group. Outfielders were led by a trio of 2016 graduates who all bring a different aspect to the game.
Matt DeYoung took the top spot with his big left handed bat. His power potential from the left side is a big ticket item at the next level and his raw athleticism is only scratching the surface of what he is capable of.
A trio of 2016's lead are group of top 15 high school outfield prospects. Here's a look at how everything broke down.
Top Outfield Prospects
1. Matt DeYoung, OF/RHP, Xavier, 2016
High level raw athleticism, advanced body, lean strength, 6-foot-4, 195-pound two-way prospect. Offensively hits from the left side, open stance, smooth loading action with short stride, strong balance through contact. Fast twitch hands, creates bat speed, short to it with extension, high level power potential. Defensively flashes tools, actions can be refined, shows the ability to play through the baseball, shuffles through release. Arm plays at 83 mph from the outfield, 4.26 runner down the line. On the mound delivery works online, works downhill well. Arm action is short, high ¾ slot, quick arm action. Showed command of his fastball, flashed run and sink to his arm side, 82-84 mph, touched 85 mph, excellent downhill plane. Changeup has sink, near fastball arm speed, 70-75 mph. Curveball has 11/5 tilt, 69-72 mph. DeYoung is a high level athlete with a big ceiling and one of the top prospects in a deep 2016 class in Wisconsin.
2. Joe Acker, OF/RHP, Marquette University, 2016
5-foot-11, 165-pound two-way player, athletic build. One of the top outfield prospects in the Class of 2016. Offensively hits from the right side, balanced stance, taller setup, smooth loading action and short stride. Advanced bat path, short to the baseball with extension, loose athletic hands, repeats his swing well, maintains excellent balance through contact. Posted 97 mph exit velocity from the tee, projects as a high level hitter. Defensively arm action is long and over the top, produces carry, 85 mph arm strength from the outfield. Has the athleticism to play through the baseball better. Acker has the ability to be a high level offensive threat and is another high level prospect in a strong 2016 class.
3. Justin Kendall, OF, Holmen, 2016
5-foot-9, 160-pound switch hitting outfielder, athletic build with length, projectable build. Offensively hits from both sides from the right side hits from a slightly closed stance, leg lift trigger, from the left side hits with slightly open stance and similar leg lift. Hands work from both sides, stays on top of baseball well, loose hands makes consistent contact. Uses the whole field, barrel awareness, handsy approach. 76 mph exit velocity from the left side, 73 mph exit velocity from the right side. Defensively plays athletically through the baseball feet work well. Natural defensive actions, short over the top arm slot 81 mph arm strength from the outfield. 4.32 runner down the line. Kendall has the pedigree to be a high follow in the 2016 class and with added strength and maturity can be a high level prospect.
4. Shane Coker, 1B/OF, Athens, 2015
6-foot-3, 200-pound left handed outfielder/first baseman, advanced build, large frame with developed strength. Offensively brings a left handed power presence to the plate. Hits from a slightly open stance, short stride, solid lower half. Well above average power, pull side approach with slight lift in his swing, timing can improve, hands works, fluid rhythm and maintains some balance. 89 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively shows a more natural presence around the bag at first. Athletic footwork, hands play. In the outfield plays through the baseball with a crowhop, 82 mph arm from the outfield, corner outfield type. 4.41 runner down the line
5. Nate Anderson, OF, Mukwonago, 2015
6-foot-1, 180-pound outfielder, left handed thrower and hitter. Strong follow prospect in the Class of 2015. Offensively hits from an open stance, smooth loading action, short stride approach, remains balanced through contact. Highly repeatable swing, short bat path, line drive hitter. Quick hands with gap to gap approach. 79 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm plays at 85 mph from the outfield, loose arm action, high 3/4. Footwork can be more efficient, plays through the baseball. Quick feet, gets down the line at 4.05.
6. Joey Baier, OF, Bay Port, 2015
Athletic build with physicality, 6-foot, 190-pound outfielder. Has shown vast improvements in his game since the Midwest Future Games, looks to be a looser athlete at the plate and outfield with more refined baseball actions. Offensively uses a short stride from the right side, maintains balance. Slightly rotational, line drive type hitter, can get through the baseball better. 86 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed improved arm strength, 88 mph arm strength from the outfield, athletic feet, 4.26 runner down the line. Plays through the baseball with a clean exchange. Strong outfield prospect in the 2015 class.
7. Lane Ochs, OF, Indian Trail, 2015
5-foot-11, 180-pound right handed outfielder, solid build. Offensively hits from an open stance, smooth loading action, short stride, strong balance through contact. Shorter path to the baseball, made hard contact, barrel aware, can get more out of his lower half, 77 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively uses a short over the top arm action, creates carry, 81 mph arm from the outfield. Showed the ability to play through the baseball. 4.36 runner down the line. Strong follow in the 2015 class, bat has the ability to play at a high level.
8. Kyle Schulz, OF/LHP, Bradford, 2015
Athletic 5-foot-10, 150-pound left handed throwing outfielder. Defensively shows advanced actions in the outfield, plays through the baseball well, fields in stride. Footwork is fluid and quick, 4.08 runner down the line. Arm plays at 84 mph from the outfield, long over the top arm action, creates carry. Offensively hits from the right side, open stance, short stride, maintains strong balance. Path is short, high contact hitter, barrel aware, repeats swing well. 82 mph exit velocity from the tee. On the mound fastball showed occasional cut action, showed feel for the zone, 76-78 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, flashed biting action, 62-64 mph, excellent feel for the pitch. Changeup has sink, near fastball arm speed, 70-72 mph.
9. JJ Johnson, RHP/OF, Edgewood, 2015
6-foot, 190-pound athletic two-way player with a strong frame that projects well. From the outfield he showed high quality, natural actions with quick footwork. Arm works short, over the top, 91 mph with strong carry. Ran a 4.41 home to first time. At the plate he hits from an open stance, short stride, solid lower half usage, above average balance. Has a line drive swing with fluid rhythm, quick bat speed. Exit velocity was 82 mph off the tee. On the mound he has a tall and fall delivery with some rhythm and effort. Arm works from over the top with clean action. Fastball was straight, sitting 80-82 mph. Showed feel for his breaking ball, throwing it with sweeping slurve action at 68-70 mph for strikes. Changeup was 78-80 mph with sinking action.
10. Connor Rutherford, LHP/OF, De Pere, 2015
6-foot-4, 190-pound two-way player, excellent frame with potential. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, regular stride. Made hard contact, hands have quickness, pull side approach, 86 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively plays with a short loose arm action, high ¾ slot, 81 mph from a crowhop. 4.15 runner home to first. On the mound delivery is smooth with loose arm action. Fastball showed cut action, 79-81 mph, showed feel. Curveball has depth on 11/5 plane, 69-70 mph. Changeup flashed sink, 74-77 mph.
11. Jack Eagan, LHP/OF, Wautoma, 2016
One of the top pitching prospects in the Midwest. Large frame, strong build, wide shoulders and solid lower half, 6-foot-2, 200-pound left handed pitcher and outfielder. Projects at a very high level on the mound. Delivery is directional, can create more separation, over-rotated finish. Arm action is long and quick, gets extension, high ¾ slot. Fastball is heavy at 86-88 mph, flashed run and command of the zone, high level fastball, extremely advanced for his age. Has the secondary stuff to match. Curveball has 11/5 shape, excellent action and depth, throws aggressively with near fastball arm speed, showed control of the zone, 65-68 mph. Changeup has advanced feel, showed excellent bottom, was able to control sinking action at the bottom of the zone, 74-78 mph, fastball arm action. Eagan has a tremendous upside on the mound with a big fastball, secondary pitches to match and a durable frame Eagan is sure to garner a ton of attention this year. Offensively he hits from the left side showing pull side power with a short stride and upper body generated bat speed. Path is slightly uphill, 90 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively his arm works similar to that on the mound, showed carry and the ability to play through the baseball, 86 mph from the outfield.
12. Zachary Nogalski, OF, Marquette University, 2017
Projectable frame, 6-foot, 150-pound outfielder, lanky build. Offensively hits from a slightly closed stance, short stride, lower half works, maintains strong balance. Bat speed present, short path to the baseball, stays on top, currently line drive type hitter. 80 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively plays with a long arm action, high ¾ slot, creates carry, 80 mph arm strength from the outfield. Defensively showed the ability to play through the baseball, can be more efficient through the baseball an into transfer. Above average runner for age, 4.37 home to first. Nogalski’s projectability looks to make him a strong follow in the Class of 2017.
13. Henry Eilen, OF, Eau Claire Memorial, 2016
Long lanky frame, 6-foot-3, 170-pound outfielder, projectable body. Offensively this from a balanced stance, short stride. Shows occasional fast twitch, choppy rhythm jumps at the baseball, quicks hands, creates hard contact. 90 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively shows the ability to play through the baseball, some effort defensively. Arm action is long, high ¾ slot, flashed carry, 86 mph from the outfield. Eilen is a strong follow in the class of 2016 with a lot of projection.
14. Derek Van Pay, RHP/OF, Denmark, 2015
6-foot, 175-pound two-way player, solid build. On the mound works from an over the top slot, regular effort, slight collapse on back side. Four seam fastball is mostly straight, some finish, showed control of the zone, 81-83 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, occasional 12/6 action, showed feel, 69-71 mph. Offensively hits from an open stance, short stride, solid balance. Shows some strength at the plate, uphill path, bat speed present. 84 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively shuffles through the baseball in the outfield, footwork can improve. 4.65 runner down the line. Arm action is short and over the top, creates carry, 87 mph from the outfield.
15. Zach Abfall, OF, Bay Port, 2015
Athletic frame with length, 5-foot-11, 155-pound left handed hitting outfielder. Offensively bat speed was present. Hits from a balanced stance, slight heel lift load. Late loading action, lacks timing. 81 mph exit velocity from the tee. Hands show the ability to work quickly, produced line drives. Showed above average foot speed. Gets out of the box well, 4.08 runner down the line form the left side. In the outfield footwork is active, plays through the baseball, can use length to his advantage more. Arm action is long, over the top slot, showed accuracy, 83 mph from the crowhop.

Michael Abraham, OF, La Crosse Logan, 2017
5-foot-7, 145-pound outfielder. Offensively hits from balanced stance, slight arm bar load, short leg lift stride, minimal lower half involvement. Drops hands at times, trigger starts late, flashes occasional bat speed for his age. Posted 79 mph exit velocity from the tee. In the outfield uses two hands through the baseball, arm works from a high ¾ slot, 62 mph from the outfield. 4.41 runner down the line from the right side.
Ryan Bader, LHP/OF, Mukwonago, 2017
6-foot, 142-pound two-way player, longer frame, slender build. Projects better on the mound, delivery has direction, slight drop and drive style. Arm action is loose, high ¾ arm slot, regular effort. Above average arm strength for his age, fastball has erratic action, lively 76-77 mph. Curveball is 61-64 mph, can tighten up, was better from the stretch. Showed a knuckleball at 60-62 mph. Offensively hits from a wider stance, slightly open, short stride, dive. Opposite field contact, 78 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm worked similar to that on the mound, 76 mph, showed above average actions for his age. 4.4 runner down the line.
Michael Beardmore, OF/RHP, Janesville Craig, 2016
5-foot-11, 145-pound two-way player. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short stride. Slightly uphill bat path, 88 mph exit velocity. Defensively plays with a crow hop from the outfield. 73 mph arm strength from the outfield. Runs a 4.33 down the line. On the mound fastball is mostly straight, 64-66 mph, touching 67 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, 51-53 mph. Changeup thrown near fastball arm speed, straight action, 58-61 mph.
Jacob Budnik, OF, Lake Country Lutheran, 2015
6-foot, 165-pound outfielder, long frame. Offensively hits from the right side, balanced setup, wide stance, short reverse stride, long loading action. Line drive type hitter, bat path shows length, 84 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively plays with a short high ¾ arm action 74 mph from the outfield. Footwork through the baseball can get more consistent, showed the ability to play through in stride.
Kyle Cable, OF/LHP, St. Joseph, 2015
5-foot-10, 175-pound left handed two-way player. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short stride approach. Bat path is flat, level swing plane, 77 mph exit velocity. Defensively plays in the outfield from a high ¾ slot, 75 mph arm strength. 4.67 runner down the line from the left side. On the mound fastball sat 70-72 mph, subtle sink. Curveball has 11/5 shape, 66 mph. Changeup has occasional sink, 69-71 mph.
Ryan Davila, LHP/OF, Warren (IL), 2016
6-foot, 185-pound left handed, two-way player with a strong frame. On the mound he has a tall and fall delivery with some rhythm, clean lines, level shoulders, and some effort. Arm works quick and loose from high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 78-79 mph with occasional arm side run for strikes. Showed quality feel for his changeup, sitting 71-72 mph with sink and run, consistently in the bottom half of the strike zone. Curveball has 11/5 shape, 63-66 mph, lacks identity. At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with a short load where the foot gets up and down, maintains balance. Swing is short with quick hands, choppy rhythm. Exit velocity was 83 mph off the tee. Defensively he fields with two hands as he plays through the ball. Arm works from a high ¾ slot at 76 mph. Posted a 4.48 home to first time.
Chris DeKrey, RHP/OF, Jefferson, 2017
6-foot-2, 180-pound lanky, two way player. On the mound his delivery works with choppy rhythm, clean direction, regular effort. Works out of the stretch only. Arm works from a high ¾ slot. Fastball was 75-78 mph and straight. Throws a changeup at 66-69 mph with sinking action. Defensively, showed solid hands with clean exchanges. Arm works long and loose with some accuracy and carry, 76 mph. Ran a 4.29 home to first time. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short stride, solid balance. Swing is steep with stiff rhythm. Exit velocity was 78 mph off the tee.
Zachary Johnson, OF, Eau Claire Memorial, 2016
5-foot-7, 145-pound right handed outfielder, average build. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short stride, linear lower half. Above average bat speed for his age, 79 mph exit velocity from the tee. Well above average defender, shows athleticism in his crowhop, plays through the baseball with quick fluid footwork. Arm action is short and over the top, loose arm produces some carry at 78 mph. 4.28 runner down the line from the right side. Johnson is young outfielder to follow in the 2016 class.
Jarred Kelenic, OF, Waukesha West, 2018
6-foot, 165-pound left handed outfielder, highly projectable athlete, huge ceiling. Youngest prospect in attendance, eighth grader, projects to be a high level prospect. Offensively hits from the left side, balanced stance, slightly crouched and narrower setup. Advanced bat speed for his age, highly aggressive swing, creates some natural lift, gets extension. Hands are loose, quick and athletic. 84 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively is just as aggressive, attacks the baseball, quick footwork, works through the baseball well. Typical outfield arm action, long over the top slot, advanced arm strength for age, 82 mph from the crow hop, quick arm. Yet to enter high school Kelenic looks to be well on his way to being one of the top prospects in the state.
Cooper Kelly, RHP/OF, Edgewood, 2017
5-foot-9, 140-pound two-way player, athletic build. On the mound operates from a high ¾ arm slot, regular arm action, works on line. Fastball has slight action, 77-78 mph, above average arm strength for his age. Breaking ball works on 12/6 plane, 68-69 mph. Changeup has occasional cut, 71-75 mph, near fastball arm speed. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short stride, maintains solid balance. Athletic swing, loose hands, smooth approach. Path has some lift, 77 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively works from the outfield with a long over the top arm action, 82 mph arm strength from the outfield. Plays through the baseball with athletic feet, 4.34 runner down the line.
Joey Kiesau, OF, Appleton North, 2017
5-foot-3, 120-pound left handed hitting outfielder. Natural outfield actions, played through the ball well, uses crow hop, hands work well. Arm action is loose, high ¾ slot, arm played at 71 mph from the outfield. 4.33 runner down the line. Offensively hits from the left side, slightly open stance, short stride. Bat path is flat, level swing, line drive type hitter, projects as a contact hitter. 71 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Keaton Knueppel, LHP/OF, Verona Area, 2016
6-foot-1, 175-pound two-way player, athletic build. Higher prospect on the mound, young left handed arm with projection. Delivery is athletic and repeatable, works directionally. Arm action is quick, easy arm action, loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball showed advanced feel, slightly heavier action, showed the ability to command the baseball. Curveball had 11/5 shape, flashed occasional 12/6 action, has depth and action, showed tight spin with bite, control of the zone, 67-69 mph. Changeup has feel, sinking action, near fastball arm speed, controlled the zone. Defensively has a short arm action from the outfield, high ¾, 78 mph from the outfield, works slightly uphill. Offensively hits from a balanced setup, taller, slightly open stance. Short opposite field approach, 78 mph exit velocity from the tee. Above average foot speed, 4.07 runner home to first. High follow prospect in Wisconsin’s 2016 class.
Sean Meyer, C/OF, Oconomowoc, 2017
5-foot-8, 135-pound catcher, lanky frame. Offensively hits from an open stance, short stride. Long level path, 75 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively behind the plate posted pop times at 2.17-2.29, arm played at 68 mph out of the crouch. From the outfield arm played at 71 mph, long arm action. 4.92 runner down the line from the right side.
Aaron Mutter, RHP/OF, Burlington, 2016
6-foot-4, 225-pound two way player with a physical frame. Offensively, he hits from an open stance with a leg kick trigger. Swing is strong and quick, generating significant barrel whip and good extension. Showed ability to drive the ball from gap to gap. Exit velocity was 88 mph. At first base he showed solid hands while playing through the ball athletically. Arm works accurately at 77 mph across the infield. Posted a 4.6 home to first time. On the mound he uses a standard delivery with a squared landing. Arm works short, from over the top. Fastball was 79-80 mph with little action. Curveball has 12/6 shape, rolling break, 63-66 mph. Changeup was 70-72 mph with occasional cut.
Riley Pelischek, LHP/OF, Denmark, 2015
6-foot-1, 170-pound left handed two-way player, lanky build, projectable frame. Higher projection as a left handed pitcher. Delivery is smooth, tall and fall approach. Arm action is long and loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball has run, works downhill, showed control of the bottom of the zone, 79-80 mph, topped out at 82 mph. Has feel for curveball, above average action, 11/5 plane, 67-69 mph. Changeup has control, 72-74 mph, slightly decelerated arm action. Offensively hits from a balances stance, short stirde. Flat bat path, occasionally drops hands. 66 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively plays with a long arm action from a high ¾ slot, 82 mph from the outfield, showed the ability to play through the baseball. 4.39 runner down the line.
Charlie Peterson, OF/RHP/INF, Waukesha South, 2017
6-foot-2, 175-pound multi-positional, long limbed player. Arm works long and loose, high ¾, from both the infield and outfield. Outfield actions much more natural and athletic. 72 mph from the outfield. 69 mph across the infield. Ran a 4.51 home to first time. Showed a solid swing at the plate. Hits from an open stance, short stride, quality balance through contact. Line drive swing with level path. Exit velocity was 73 mph off the tee. On the mound he has a tall and fall delivery, level shoulders, clean lines, and regular effort. Arm is long and loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball was straight, 73-76 mph for strikes. Throws an 11/5 breaking ball with rolling action, 63-65 mph. Changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed for consistent strikes, 68-72 mph with fading action.
Chase Scharnek, RHP/OF, Waukesha West, 2015
6-foot-3, 180-pound two-way player, long frame, slender build. On the mound arm works from an over the top slot with some effort. Fastball is mostly straight, 81-82 mph, touched 83 mph. Slider has depth, more downward action, 71-75 mph. Straight changeup flashed sink, 70-72 mph. Offensively hits from a wide stance, short stride. Bat path is long, late trigger, above average bat speed, 90 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively plays in the outfield with two hands, over the top arm action. Above average footspeed, 4.01 runner down the line.
Ryan Schmitt, RHP/OF, Arrowhead, 2016
Athletic build with length, 5-foot-10, 160-pound two-way player. Projects well on the mound, delivery is athletic, shows occasional effort, maintains athleticism from the stretch. Arm action is quick and loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball has run, 85-87 mph, showed feel for the zone, has finish through the zone. Curveball works on 11/5 plane, throws with aggressive arm action, occasional sharp action, 70-72 mph, advanced pitch. Showed changeup to be best secondary pitch, thrown with fastball similar arm action, sinking action, 72-74 mph, with well above average control of the zone. Offensively hits from an open stance, short stride, lower hands. Short to the baseball, above average bat speed, 84 mph exit velocity. Defensively plays through the baseball athletically, quick arm action, high ¾ slot, gets carry, 87 mph from his crow hop. Gets down the line at 4.5. Schmitt is a high level 2016 prospect with a quick arm that projects for more velocity with added strength. Schmitt is a high follow in the region.
Shamus Segersten, C/3B/OF, Marian Central Catholic, 2016
6-foot-1, 185-pound catcher/third baseman/outfield. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short loading action, longer stride, can get more out of lower half, solid balance. Strong swing, power potential, gets extension, above average bat speed. Defensively works with a short arm action, 81 mph from the outfield, 73 mph across the infield and 68 mph out of the crouch. Posted 2.19-2.45 pop times. 4.44 runner down the line.
Michael Singleton, OF, St. Joseph, 2015
5-foot-10, 180-pound outfielder, solid build. Offensively hits from an open stance, longer stride, lower half partially involved. Exit velocity at 79 mph from the tee. In the outfield arm plays over the top, short arm action. Showed the ability to attack the baseball and play through it in stride. 4.61 runner down the line.
DJ Sweeney, LHP/INF/OF, Milton, 2017
5-foot-10, 180-pound left handed two-way player. On the mound arm works from a high ¾ slot, short arm action, delivery falls to third base side. Fastball is mostly straight, 73-75 mph, touched 76 mph. Breaking ball sits 69-71 mph. Changeup has sink 70-71 mph. Offensively hits from both sides, balanced stance, short stride. 78 mph exit velocity from the right side, 72 mph exit velocity from the left side. Defensively in the outfield plays with two hands through the baseball, high ¾ arm slot, short arm action, 72 mph from the outfield, outfield actions similar to infield actions, 69 mph across the diamond.
Carl Valk, OF, Appleton North, 2017
5-foot-7, 130-pound switch hitting outfielder. Offensively hits from both sides, open stance, short stride, slightly dives, maintains balance. Solid bat path, mid to opposite field approach, contact type hitter. 73 mph exit velocity from both sides. Defensively plays through the baseball with a crow hop, some hesitations attacking the baseball, 4.43 runner home to first. Throws from the left side, arm action is long, 66 mph arm strength from the outfield.
Garret Wegner, OF, Lodi, 2016
6-foot-1, 180-pound outfielder with a solid frame. At the plate he hits from a balanced setup, backward hand load with short stride to contact, and solid balance. Swing is uphill with above average bat speed. Makes consistently hard contact. Exit velocity was 78 mph off the tee. Defensively he moves with heavy feet through the ball. Arm works long, high ¾ slot with some carry at 72 mph. Ran a 4.26 home to first time.
Nick Winter, OF/LHP, Milwaukee Lutheran, 2016
5-foot-9, 130-pound two-way player, athletic build with length. Defensively showed advanced actions in the outfield, plays through the baseball athletically, attacks the baseball on the move, plays in stride. Arm works long and loose from a high ¾ slot, 81 mph from the outfield with some carry. 4.3 runner home to first from the left side. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, toe tap stride. Late timing, opposite field approach, singles guy. 76 mph exit velocity from the tee. On the mound works from a high ¾ slot, loose easy arm action.
