Green Bay Preseason ID: Statistical Analysis
March 1, 2022
On Feb. 27th, the PBR Wisconsin team hosted its fourth event of 2022, the first-ever Green Bay Preseason ID, at Impact Sports Academy in De Pere, Wis. This was an open event for all high school classes (2022-25) and gave our staff an ample look at the area's top players.
If you missed us in De Pere, check out our showcase page to see when we’re in the neighborhood next.
On Monday we published our biggest takeaways and highlights from Sunday’s showcase within our Quick Hits story. Today, we’ll dive right into the statistical side of things, analyzing Sunday’s top performers from several different statistical categories. Throughout the rest of this week, we’ll be diving deeper into all of the data we collected, too, with the help of our Blast Motion and TrackMan devices.
TOP 60 TIMES
Making his PBR debut, INF Benje Hencke (West De Pere, 2023) started off his day by running the fastest 60 time of the event at 6.64. Built at a physical 6-foot, 185 pounds, Hencke moves well for his size and left Green Bay as a name to closely monitor throughout this year. Another winner from this event was OF AJ Korth (Menasha, 2023) as the multi-sport junior ran the day's third fastest 60-yard dash.
MAX FASTBALL VELOCITY
One of the biggest winners of the entire winter thus far has been RHP TJ Hauser (Appleton East, 2023) who impressed again in Green Bay, throwing the hardest fastball of the event. A couple of weeks ago, at our Fox Cities Preseason ID event, Hauser’s ‘pen impressed our staff and he backed it up this past weekend in Green Bay. Hauser’s stock is on the rise as he remains a top uncommitted name in the Badger State. The second hardest bullet of the day came from Benje Hencke, a major winner during Sunday’s event. Rounding the top three of the hardest fastballs from Sunday’s event was Cole Bensen, showing an uptick in velocity since we last saw him in the summer. This velocity jump, along with improved offspeed offerings makes Bensen a name to know going into the high school season.
MAX EXIT VELOCITY
INF Bryson Koehne (Notre Dame Academy, 2024) led all hitters when it came to max exit velocity. Koehne is another name that attended our Fox Cities Preseason and seemed to make some minor adjustments within the weeks between the events, as he gained roughly four mph in his max exit velocity, averaged the highest exit velocity, and hit the furthest ball of the day at 378 feet. Right behind Koehne was INF Eli Retzlaff (Fox Valley Lutheran, 2023) who put together a solid round BP. Retzlaff used his 6-foot-3, 230 pound stature to barrel balls, his hardest being 98.4 mph. During BP is where the aforementioned Benje Hencke really caught our scouts attention as he had one of the most put together rounds of the event, where he utilizes quite and repeatable movements to consistently drive the ball hard to all fields.
MAX INFIELD VELOCITY
Showing off his innate arm speed, TJ Hauser led all infielders velocity across the diamond, up two mph since the Fox Cities event a couple of weeks ago with a 90 mph max. Adding to an already impressive performance, Benje Hencke had the second hardest throw across the infield. Hencke’s athleticism definitely is shown while on the infield dirt as he travels well side-to-side with clean infield actions and solid glove. INF Landen Lozier (Notre Dame Academy, 2023) has long been on our radar for his controlled defensive skill-set and his arm reached an 85 mph max in this showing.
MAX OUTFIELD VELOCITY
OF Alex Hanneman (Appleton East, 2023) and OF AJ Price (Neenah, 2024) each hit 89 mph on their hardest throws to home. After a solid round of BP, Hanneman jumped out into the outfield and showcased athletic footwork coupled with a strong arm and emerged as a name to keep on eye on throughout the spring and summer. At 5-foot-9, 135 pounds, Price’s arm strength is something that is very intriguing and if he can translate it to the mound will make him a name to know. Another member of the 2024 class, OF Easton Arendt (De Pere), showed off advanced arm strength on his throws from the outfield, topping at 87 mph.
MAX CATCHER VELOCITY
Like many other players in attendance on Sunday, we last saw C Rheis Johnson (Denmark, 2023) at our Fox Cities event. In Green Bay, Johnson threw one mph harder than he did a couple of weeks ago, at 79 mph, leading all catchers. C William Hoerner (Appleton North, 2024) and C Bryan Gerbers (De Pere, 2024) each topped at 76 on their throws down to second. Hoerner, making his PBR event debut, showcased a quality skill-set from behind the plate that should only improve as he matures.
TOP POP TIMES
Despite not having the hardest throws of the day, C Evan Olson (Kimberly, 2023) made up for it with his quick feet and fast transition on his throws down to second, to have the fastest average pop times. The aforementioned Gerbers' arm strength coupled with fluid actions behind the plate led to him having the second quickest average pop times.
