Fox Cities Preseason ID: Stats Posted

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Wisconsin/Illinois

On Sunday we completed our second leg of the Preseason I.D. showcases with the Fox Cities Preseason I.D. Over the next several weeks we will be pumping out stats, scouting reports, videos, and more analysis from this event. Today we bring you the complete stats from the Fox Cities Preseason I.D. This will simply bring you the top measurables from the showcase in several stat categories – 60 time, positional velocity, pop times, exit velocity and max fastball. Here’s a look at what we’ve compiled.

Top 60 Yard Dash

Six prospects recorded laser timed 60’s under 7.0, a standard bar typically used to denote an above average runner. Two of the six were just freshman, Grant Emme (Kaukauna) and Kyle Kroener (Tomah), and should improve those times as they develop into their bodies. Our top 60 was ran by Wautoma’s Coltin Burt at 6.89.

Top Infield Velocities

Infield arm strength is typically a judge of whether or not an infielder will be able to stick on the left side at the next level, where making longer throws are critical parts of the game. Jake Sommers (Hortonville, 2015) and Nathan Burns (West Bend West, 2017) showed the best arm strength across the diamond. Not surprisingly the duo were two of the top arms on the mound as well.

Top Outfield Velocities

A strong outfield arm is something that opposing third base coaches will always keep in the back of their head throughout the course of a game and can serve as a deterrent for opposing baserunners more than anything else. A 90 mph arm from the outfield is a typical benchmark for above average arm strength at the next level.

Top Catching Velocities and Pop Times

Controlling the running game largely rests on the shoulder of the catcher, and a strong arm and quick release are used to grade out top catchers that can perform at the next level. Here’s a look at the top arms and pop times from the event.

Top Exit Velocities

Exit velocity is recorded by tracking the velocity the ball exits the barrel of the bat when hit from the tee. 6-foot-4, 250-pound Griffin Doersching (Greendale, 2017) posted one of the top exit velocities we’ve ever seen at a PBR Showcase, hitting 101 mph multiple times. That kind of pop is rare to find in a sophomore, let alone most high school prospects.

Top Fastball Velocities

Maybe the best part of scouting is finding that “diamond in the rough”, or pop up guy that is a late bloomer or just flying under the radar. For Unsigned Senior Jake Sommers (Hortonville), the Fox Cities Preseason I.D. will undoubtedly catapult him into the category of best available unsigned seniors. Sommers, who was not even part of the Polar Bears rotation last year sat 87-89 mph on the mound with live arm.
