Today we continue to roll out analysis from the Fox Cities Preseason ID Showcase with the infield prospects prospects.
Power hitting first baseman Griffin Doersching takes the top spot in the infield showing an event best 110 mph exit velocity from a tee. At 6-foot-4, 250-pounds Doersching shows athleticism at first base with soft hands and good feel for the bag.
UW-Milwaukee commit Nate DeYoung showed a loose, easy swing at the plate and athletic actions in the infield. SS Nicholas Urban-Michalak is a quick twitch athlete with big tools. Urban-Michalak threw 93 mph across the infield, ran the 60 at 6.74, and showed strength thru conact with 91 mph exit velocity from a tee. Bryce Cross showed natural actions at shortstop and solid tools running a 7.08 60 yard dash.
Let’s take a look at the top infield prospects from the event.
Top Prospects
1. Griffin Doersching, 1B, Greendale, 2017
Currently ranked No. 8 in Wisconsin class of 2017. 6-foot-4, 250-pound right-handed hitting first baseman with an extra large strong frame with athleticism. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a leg kick stride and slight collapse on the backside with good balance. Gap to gap hitter with explosive batspeed and a level path with extension thru contact. Good approach at the plate, consistently hitting line drives up the middle. One of the premier power hitters in the Midwest in the 2017 class, 110 mph exit velocity from a tee. 7.37 runner in the 60. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot, throws showed carry throwing 88 mph across the infield. Showed feel for the bag at first with athletic actions and fluid footwork. Soft hands, picking throws at first.
2. Nate DeYoung, 3B, Xavier, 2018
UW-Milwaukee commit. Currently ranked No. 11 in Wisconsin class of 2018. 6-foot-4, 195-pound left-handed hitting third baseman with a lanky frame. Defensively has a loose arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Athletic actions with fluid footwork and soft hands. Threw 81 mph across the infield. Offensively hits from a tall, slightly open stance with a smooth load and good balance. Loose easy hands create plus batspeed. Fluid rhythm at the plate. Showed strength thru contact with 91 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.32.
3. Nicholas Urban-Michalak, SS, Park, 2017
Quick, twitch athlete with wiry strength at 6-foot-1, 176-pounds. Right-handed hitting shortstop. Toolsy player running the 60 at 6.74. Defensively has a loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Throws showed carry throwing an event best 93 mph across the infield. Plays fast with quick footwork while playing thru the ball. At the plate hits from a crouched stance with a long stride and good balance. Line drive gap to gap hitter with fluid rhythm and some explosion in the hands. Showed strength thru contact with 91 mph exit velocity from a tee.
4. Bryce Cross, SS, Hortonville, 2017
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop with an athletic frame. Defensively has a loose arm action from an over the top slot. Throws showed carry, throwing 82 mph across the infield. Soft, sure hands with fluid, athletic actions and a quick, clean exchange. Showed the ability to play on the run. Offensively hits from an athletic, slightly open setup. Loose, athletic swing with good balance. Level path with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.08. One of the top middle infielders in the Wisconsin 2017 class.
5. Drew Behling, 3B/RHP, Waupun, 2017
6-foot, 200-pound left-handed hitting 3B/RHP with a strong frame. Offensively hits from a tall, open stance with a short stride back to even with good balance. Pull power hitter with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Creates leverage in swing with a good approach. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.63. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Accurate throws with carry. Showed good body control with average hands. Threw 80 mph across the infield. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short arm action. Drop and drive delivery with a square landing and recoil on finish. Fastball sat 78-81 mph. Curveball sat 63-66 mph. Got around slider at 66-67 mph. Maintained armspeed on changeup with sinking action at 73-75 mph.
6. Ryan Brouch, 2B, Appleton West, 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting second baseman with an athletic frame. Defensively has a loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Quick footwork with soft hands, can play on the run. Threw 80 mph across the infield. Offensively hits from a slightly open stance. Gap to gap hitter with a short, uphill path. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. 8. Joseph Lipsky, SS, Lake Country Lutheran, 2017
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop with a solid frame. Offensively hits from a wide base with an open setup. Short level path with extension thru contact. Line drive hitter with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 91 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.55. Defensively has a loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Threw 81 mph across the infield.
9. Pierce Blohowiak, C/OF, Xavier, 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting utility player with an athletic frame. Currently ranked No. 34 in the Wisconsin Class of 2018. Defensively took drills in the infield, outfield, and behind the plate. Showed best in the outfield where he has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Plays thru the ball with a quick exchange. Threw 85 mph from the outfield. In the infield showed solid footwork with average hands. Threw 77 mph across the diamond. Behind the plate showed good blocking skills with a quick release. Popped 2.05-2.12 and threw 70 mph from the crouch. Showed soft hands receiving in bullpens. Offensively hits from a wide base with a short stride and good balance. Loose swing with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 87 mph exit velocity from a tee.
