GREEN BAY, WI – The Bay Port Pirates clinched their fourth consecutive sectional championship on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-1 win over Green Bay Preble in the sectional final.
Joe Baier got the start on the mound for Bay Port, while Preble sophomore Griffin Summers took the ball for the Hornets.
Both pitchers were able to work out of jams early in the game until Bay Port finally broke through with a run in the bottom of the 4th. Quinn Pierner drove in the run with an RBI single.
Baier knocked in another run for the Pirates in the bottom of the 5th with a double off the centerfield fence. Later in the frame, Tucker Noe executed a squeeze bunt perfectly to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.
Preble led off the top of the 6th with two singles and a walk to load the bases. In a game-changing at bat, Preble outfielder Zach Champine drilled a ball to deep left field. He came up about 25 feet short of what would have been a go-ahead grand slam, and instead had to settle for a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-1. The Hornets weren’t able to capitalize for the rest of the inning, and the threat passed.
In the bottom of the frame, the Pirates added some insurance runs via an RBI single from Zach Abfall and an RBI double from Alec Ingold.
Dakota Klein came in to relieve Baier on the mound in the 7th and locked up both the win and the state tournament berth that came with it for Bay Port.
Baier pitched six innings for the Pirates and scattered five hits, struck out six, and allowed one earned run. Summers also went six for Preble and gave up four earned runs, walked five, and allowed nine hits.
Pierner paced the Pirates with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Ryan Dougherty went 2-for-2 for Preble.
The Hornets’ season came to an end with the loss, but they figure to be back next year better than ever, as they are only losing two seniors.
The win sends Bay Port to the state quarterfinals, where they’ll face Oconomowoc at 1 PM on Tuesday.
