Uncommitted Spotlight - '21 Infielders

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Puyallup, WA - Earlier this Fall we were able to hold an event specifically for uncommitted 2021 prospects.

Fall events events such as this provide players with the opportunity to build their profile with the most up-to-date information and video footage before heading into the off-season. All players in attendance receive an online profile with their verified statistics, player report, picture and video. Additionally, all subsequent stories written about a prospect will be linked to the player’s profile, ultimately creating a one-stop shop for recruiters.

Showcases help identify which prospects have asserted themselves towards the top of their class as well as who might be one of the next youngsters to emerge onto the scene. They also serve as potential identifiers for invite-only events such as our Future Games and Junior Future Games

2021 infielders

Riley Fender 1B / 3B / La Center, WA / 2021

Long, projectable frame with a high waist at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds. Frame can carry more weight. Nearly identical set-up in the box to what we saw over the winter. Standing a bit taller now, less bend in lower half and showing a square alignment to the pitcher. Hands stay relaxed with a tight, short stretch back to create his load as he takes forward stride. Stays balanced, with minimal weight shift. Slight coil with upper half prior to launching swing. Easy, rhythmic swing with controlled effort. Best contact went to the middle of the field. Defensively, worked at both corner INF spots. Showed clean footwork with easy, repeatable actions. Size and body control should play at either corner. Keeps a soft glove hand at 3rd with a low ¾ slot. At 1B, provides a sizable catch radius with his length and mobility. Moved around the bag easily and showed a slightly higher release point when throwing across the diamond

Leonard Furlong 2B / SS / Kamiak, WA / 2021

5-foot-9, 165 pounds. Compact, athletic frame with a proportional build. Offensively, sets up with a simple, quiet stance and tall posture. Hands show rhythm and slight movement as he steps back into a toe tap & then puts on short, forward move on the ball. Shows a scoop type load to get hands into launch position as stride foot gets down. Level, rotational swing path thru the zone with a flat finish after contact. Worked mostly pull-side to middle of the field. Defensively, uses a wide, balanced pre-pitch set up with some hip hinge at the waist. Shows quick, active footwork to move behind the ball and then comes thru with momentum/rhythm as he funnels in. Consistent exchange that gets deep into his set-up and keeps ball tight to core. Arm action stays short/compact into a high ¾ release. Ball flight stays true out of hand with consistent accuracy. Adjusted slot as needed on double play feed and slow roller.

Andrew Johnson SS / 2B / Bellevue, WA / 2021

Athletic frame with lean strength at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds. Sets up with an open stance and flexion on his back-side. Gets into a taller position with a high, open leg lift that clears up his lead hip. Hands stay beneath shoulder height with a deep load. Works direct to the ball with strong & quick hands. Level finish thru contact with a strong, posted lead leg and full hip rotation. Gap to gap power with a line-drive approach. On defense, quick & agile defender with an aggressive tempo. Noticeable first step quickness. Maintains a low center of gravity while ranging laterally to the ball. Keeps momentum working thru the play and into his exchange. Loose, easy arm action. Released mostly from a low ¾ slot, especially when on the move.

Mac McCain SS / 2B / Woodinville, WA / 2021

6-foot-2, 190 pounds with a long, wiry frame and some present strength. Showed physical maturation and more speed from our last look in July of ‘19. Had an impressive showing in BP with a peak bat speed of 78.1mph. Sets up in a wide base with a tall, upright stance. Hands start away from body in relaxed position then show a short pull-back to load as he takes forward stride. Toe-tap type landing with a balanced base. Quick, compact swing. Hands stay inside of the ball. Rotates thru core and posts up with a strong front leg. Gap to gap power with chance to add more pop as he fills out. Strong, 2-handed finish thru contact. Defensively, showed consistent and sound footwork at SS. Should be able to handle INF duties long-term. Moves laterally with balance and body control, staying in rhythm and working thru the ball when he can. Controlled soft glove hand throughout. Uses a quick exchange and release to get rid of the ball with limited wasted movement. Ball shows accuracy out of hand from a higher slot.

Drew Wathen 2B / SS / Skyline , WA / 2021

6-foot-1, 180 pounds with a proportional build and a more developed frame than what we saw back in Feb. Added strength has helped at the plate, where overall pop off the bat has increased. Gets set in a narrow, slightly open stance in the box with flexion in his lower half. Uses a quick toe tap into forward stride to establish a wider hitting base. Hands show a push back load to get into hitting position. Smooth, repeatable swing with loft and leverage. Catches ball out front with a slight uphill path. High finish thru contact with a strong, balanced lower half. Defensively, starts tall before working towards the plate and spreading out his set-up. Keeps feet underneath him while ranging to the ball. Sinks down to the ball with deep hips and a flat upper half. Receives ball out front then funnels into core. Waist high exchange with a continuous arm path into a ¾ release.
