Uncommitted Spotlight - 2023 Top Uncommitted

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Earlier this Fall we updated and expanded our 2023 class rankings for Washington. While a good portion of the class has made their commitment, there are several talented players left on the board.

Class rankings are updated multiple times throughout the year with the goal of helping coaches/evaluators identify players in the area.

Today we're spotlighting 3 uncommitted prospects who impressed last year and will be pivotal contributors as seniors in 2023.

2023 - Top uncommitted

Paxton Fenberg RHP / SS / Lake Washington, WA / 2023

Fenberg is physically built with compact strength throughout his frame at 5’11, 170. Showed off his pure stuff on the mound in July at our Tahoma workout and established himself as one of the top remaining uncommitted arms in 2023. Works with a quick, athletic delivery down the slope and flashes noticeable athleticism. Impressive arm speed, especially out front at release. Stays behind the ball and finishes with late intent. FB was up to 87 and never dipped below 85. Ball shows life out of hand and comes into the zone from a lower release height, giving it added carry.. Also shaped both a CB (71-72) and SL (75-76) with his CB showing more 11/5 sweeping action while the SL had more tight, late cut and less shape. CH gives him a 4th offering at 73-74 and it works as a “power CH” with hard tumble/sink in the bottom of the zone. Looks poised to log significant innings this upcoming season.

Jase Vopalensky SS / 2B / Richland, WA / 2023

One of the fastest athletes in the class, Vopalensky can straight up fly when he gets moving on the diamond. We were able to see Vopalensky in game action on multiple looks this spring as he helped Richland make a deep run in the 4A state playoffs. A quick twitch defender at SS with burst and range, there’s plenty of body control to stick in the middle of the diamond. The arm works from a lower slot and he showed consistent throwing accuracy on the opportunities we saw. Offensively, it’s a ‘handsy’ type swing that relies on strong, quick wrists and a contact approach. Allows the ball to travel and uses the middle of the field to his advantage. He’s a difference maker on the bases and has the tools to be a top of the line-up table setter at the next level.

Mason Goodson RHP / SS / Stanwood , WA / 2023

Goodson has improved tremendously over the course of his HS career. Back in February of 2021 at his first PBR event, he pitched 80-81 and topped at 82 in a bullpen setting. Then in May of 2022 he was topping at 90 during the state playoffs and pitching in the 87-89 range. With great size at 6’3, 210, Goodson has a workhorse build and can eat up innings as a starter. For a bigger athlete, he gets short with his arm action and creates some added deception to a FB with up to 2,497 rpm. We’ve seen both a CB and SL from him, with the CB showing more vertical depth and 11/5 shape while the SL gets late horizontal break and can sweep out of the zone when he needs a ‘k’. Overall, it’s a big bodied athlete with a live arm and aggressive delivery/demeanor on the bump. One of the best pure arm talents left in the ‘23 class.
