2018 TOS: Tuesday Notebook
June 20, 2018
The 2018 Tournament of Stars takes place in Cary, NC, at the USA Baseball National Training Complex from June 19-23. Here are highlights from Tuesday, the first day of games…
Pride 5, Brave 4
As is typical for TOS, the heat was turned up to 11 in Cary with the heat index reaching triple digits and a crowd of scouts packing the stands. After teams went through practices Monday, they returned Tuesday for batting practice and games, spaced out so there was no overlap. Pride got things started and IF Tyler Callihan (Providence HS, FL), fresh off a strong showing at the PBR Florida Limited Series, didn’t waste any time making an impression. He showed a loose, whippy swing from the left side with good bat speed and at least average raw power to his pull side. In the game, he collected hits in his first two at-bats, singling back up the middle against a 90 mph fastball down and then staying on a curveball for a single through the left side.
OF Corbin Carroll (Lakeside HS, WA) also had a good day, going 2-for-4 with a triple, run scored and RBI. He struck out looking in his first at-bat, but laced the three-bagger in his second, squaring up a 90 mph fastball to right-center field. He then stayed with a curveball down and away for an RBI single and lined out hard to left field in his final at-bat.
RHP Brennan Malone (Porter Ridge HS, NC) was arguably the best arm on the day. He has a strong frame at 6-foot-3, 203 pounds and sat 90-94 in 3.1 innings of work. He allowed three runs (none earned) on two hits and two walks, though all of that came in his final two-thirds of an inning. He works extremely quickly and got arm-side sink to his fastball while also spinning a sharp curveball with 11/5 shape and depth at 75-77. It had rolling break at times, but has the makings of being at least an average pitch down the road. He also showed feel for a changeup at 84.
Here are some more notes from the rest of Brave vs. Pride…
