Wilson No-Hits West Springfield in DC/VA Showdown

A cold night saw No. 24 Wilson travel to take on West Springfield in an inter-state matchup of defending State champions. Wilson sent junior starter Collin Bosley-Smith (Duke) to the mound of to open the game and West Springfield countered with senior Bryce Haynes (Virginia State).West Springfield struggled to figure Bosley-Smith and the Wilson pitching staff, which combined for a no-hitter on the evening. The Wilson offense was able to get things going in the middle innings, eventually leading to a 7-2 win for the Tigers.

The two starters matched each other early in the game, as the first three innings went by without either team scoring a run. In the top of the fourth, Wilson got on the board first, scoring three runs and taking advantage of four Spartan errors. The Tigers picked up a big two-out 2 RBI single from sophomore catcher Jack Wallis to make the score 3-0.

In the top of the fifth, Wilson added to their lead again as the inning opened with a pair of hit-by-pitches. After both runners moved into scoring position, junior Charlie Ganote drove in a run with a sac fly and sophomore Jeffrey Coakley drove in another run with a single. The inning ended as Spartan senior center fielder Alex Reilly (CNU) hosed a potential third run at home plate on Coakley’s base hit. In the middle the of the fifth, the score was Wilson 5, West Springfield 0.

In the bottom of the 5th, West Springfield finally got on the board and responded with 2 runs of their own. The inning’s leadoff hitter reached on an error and eventually came in to score when a hitter reached on a strikeout with a wild pitch. Two more walks and another wild pitch would allow another run to score, but Bosley-Smith was able to stop the inning there and after 5 the score was 5-2.

In the top of the sixth, a leadoff walk put a runner on for Wilson and two batters later Bosley-Smith delivered an RBI single. He would eventually come around to score on a passed ball, making the score 7-2.

Bosley-Smith's night on the mound was done at this point was replaced by freshman Kai Leckszas. Leckszas would fire two scoreless innings and the game would end with a final score of Wilson 7, West Springfield 2.

For Wilson, Bosley-Smith went 5 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 8 K, 3 BB and was 1-3 with an RBI at the plate. Leckszas went 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 HBP, 1 K. Wallis was 1-2 with 2 RBIs and a walk. Ganote was 1-3 with a SAC and an RBI. Coakley was 1-4 with an RBI.

For West Springfield, Reilly was 0-2 with 2 BB and threw a perfect inning with three strikeouts. Haynes went 3.2 IP 3 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K and was hurt by four errors behind him.
