On Monday, March 19, Brentsville District traveled to Kettle Run to take on the Cougars in a non-District matchup between opponents that are located about 6 miles from each other. Kettle Run would win the game by a score of 5-1 behind a dominant pitching performance from sophomore righthander Joe Vogatsky.
Vogatsky fired a scoreless top of the first, working around two hits to escape the inning by inducing a double play. The Cougar offense came to the plate in the bottom of the first against Brentsville senior Mason Posey (George Mason) and they got to work quickly as Posey issued a pair of walks to open the game. Stolen bases put the runners into scoring position and Kettle Run opened up a quick lead as senior first baseman Bailey Burke singled into left-center, driving in two and making the score 2-0 after the first inning.
Vogatsky struggled with what was a very tight strike zone in the second, walking in a run before getting a pair of strikeouts to end the top half of the inning with the bases loaded and Kettle Run still ahead 2-1. The Cougars got the run back on a bases loaded fielder's choice that saw Jared Johnson hustle hard into third base and win a footrace to the bag to allow a run to score. After two complete, the score was 3-1.
Both pitchers would settle in a bit at this point. Posey never had a clean inning, but kept the Cougars off of the scoreboard in the third and fourth before seeing his day come to an end. Vogatsky came back after escaping that jam in the second inning and began to completely dominate the game. He had two strikeouts in each of his remaining innings and only allowed one baserunner after the second inning, retiring the last twelve hitters he faced before his night came to an end after the sixth.
Kettle Run would add a pair of runs to their lead, with one coming in fifth and another coming in the sixth, with Burke adding a third RBI on the evening to get the final run. Burke then entered the game and threw a perfect seventh inning to seal the 5-1 win for Kettle Run.
For Brentsville, Posey was charge with the loss with 4 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 5 BB, HBP, 2 K while also going 2-3 at the plate. Junior Jake DeLisi was 1-3 at the plate and Jake Cornwell was also 1-3. Sophomore Vince DiMauro had 2 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 4 K in relief.
For Kettle Run, Vogatsky picked up the win, going 6 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 11 K. He was also 1-2 at the plate with a 2B. Johnson was 3-3 with a 3B, BB, 2 SB, and 2 R. Burke was 2-3 with 3 RBI and a 3B. Bryce McKenna was 1-2 with a BB, an RBI, and 2 SB.
