Scouting Report
VA/DC Scout Blog
Athletic and projectable frame, with room to add strength to. Potentially one of the best catch-and-throw backstops I have seen in the Commonwealth in the 2021 class. Very quick release; arm is quick, short, and gets rid of it. Throws have carry and accuracy is advanced. Receives well, shows soft hands, nice hip control and blocking the baseball. Advanced defensive catching prospect. At the plate shows a solid foundation, not everything has synced up yet. Hits from an athletic setup, has a short and smooth load. Shorter swing path to the ball with some bat speed. Has a tendency to pull off of pitches on the outer half, causing the barrel to cut short on his swings. Shows some strength at the plate and power potential, just would like to see the hands-free up a little more to allow to work to opposite field gap more often.
PreSeason All-State II
Hatfield is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an athletic stance, short stride on line, smooth short load back, hips rotate completely with some violence, and he maintains some balance during his swing. Longer path but still a fast bat that is quick to the zone, good strength at contact with extension through the ball. Showed slight pull preference, slightly uphill swing generates some loft to his pull side, power present already with chance to add more, exit velocity was 90. Behind the plate, keeps body low and behind ball receiving, hands are soft receiving but holds strikes firmly. Gains ground towards second during a quick, clean exchange. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 76 and pop times were 2.00-2.06 and throws were very accurate. Ran 4.15 home to first.
Top Prospect Games II
Hatfield is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, smooth load back, hips rotate completely with violence, and he maintains some balance during his swing. Short to ball, fast whippy bat, showed a pull preference with power potential, slightly uphill line drive swing, strong at contact with extension, exit velocity was 84. Behind the plate, very quick clean exchange. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short quick arm action, position velocity was 76, pop times were 1.89-1.96 with good accuracy on his throws.
Pre-Season All-State 2/17/18
Hatfield is 5-10 with an athletic frame, he hits from the right side from a slightly open athletic stance. Short leg kick stride on line, small load down, good rhythm to setup. Hips rotate completely with some explosiveness, has some balance during swing. Short to ball, gets barrel to contact point in a hurry, level line drive swing with extension through the ball. Line drive hitter with gap power and potential for more. Showed good approach working gap to gap. Exit velocity was 90. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot, short loose arm action. Position velocity was 76 and pop times were 2.01-2.07. Quiet receiver, soft hands catching ball. Ran a 4.45 home to first.
