A look at the Conference Champions:
Conference 17 champion Great Bridge is in its first year in the 4A East after reclassifying last summer. The Wildcats have a top arm in Michael Bienlien (NC State) and also have plenty of depth behind him and an experienced roster. Great Bridge won both of its Conference tournament games 10-0 and will be ready to play low scoring tournament games.
No. 6 Jamestown is the Ironclad Conference 18 champion, having defeated rival Lafayette for the second time in a row in the Championship game. The Eagles only loss this spring was an early season matchup with Lafayette, and the Eagles also have wins against Hickory, Grassfield, and Poquoson this spring. Jamestown is another team in this bracket with an ace that can take over a game at any time in senior lefty Kent Klyman (NC State). The Eagles also have two big pieces in their lineup in Chris Jones (Liberty) and Evan Lowery (Navy).
King George won the Conference 19 championship after entering the conference tournament as the two seed. The Foxes took advantage of their first round bye and beat Courtland with its number two on the mound and then beat top seed Louisa in the championship.
No. 2 Hanover is the Conference 20 champions and the Hawks have not lost a game to an opponent from Virginia this spring. Hanover has an extremely deep senior class that has been a part of State Championship runs in 2013 and 2014. With a younger team last year, the Hawks reached the State Semifinals before their season came to a close. The Hawks have been led all spring by the contributions of seniors John Gregory (Longwood), Grey Lyttle (High Point), and Cayman Richardson (Virginia) as well as some help from youngster Jack Dragum (Virginia) and many others on what is arguably the deepest, most talented public school roster in our coverage area.
Our Staff Picks:
Richard Longfellow
Championship: Hanover defeats Jamestown
Dark Horse: Lafayette
Early Upset: Dinwiddie over King George
Best Game on Paper: Great Bridge vs. Lafayette. Bienlien on the mound for the Wildcats against Andre Lipcius (Tennessee) for the Rams would make for a heck of a game.
John Nolan
Championship: Hanover defeats Jamestown
Dark Horse: Lafayette. The Rams got hot in the playoffs last year and ran all the way to capture the 3A State Championship. They have the talent to do that again this spring.
Early Upset: Dinwiddie over King George
Best Game on Paper: Jamestown vs. Hanover. Klyman against the Hanover lineup with Lyttle, Gregory, or Dragum on the mound for the Hawks would be an outstanding game.
