Last Thursday saw a Northwestern District showdown in the Class 3 half of the District as William Monroe traveled to take on Brentsville. Both team went with senior arms in what they anticipated would be a low-scoring tight affair. Senior Lance Williams (East Carolina) got the ball for the Dragons and senior Brayden Hutchison (Paul D. Camp CC) got the start for the Tigers.

A pretty big strike zone most of the day combined with the raw stuff that both pitchers were throwing out kept the scoring and contact minimal early. Brentsville did take advantage of a leadoff single and a walk combined with two wild pitches to take a 1-0 lead in the second. Through two, each pitcher had 5 strikeouts. 

Hutchison started to tire in the fourth and put a few runners on ahead of Williams, who delivered a 2-RBI double to right-center and gave Monroe a 2-1 lead. Williams was dominant, going 5.1 innings with double-digit strikeouts, leaving the game with that 2-1 lead. Brentsville nearly tied it after he left in the sixth, but the game headed to the seventh, still 2-1. Junior lefty Connor Lyle did a spectacular job in relief of Hutchison, shutting down Monroe in the fifth-seventh innings. 

In the bottom of the seventh, down their last out, the Tigers got a bolt of energy and new life as junior Austin Harris launched a game-tying solo home run to left to force extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Monroe got a leadoff walk and a throwing error on a sacrifice attempt to put two in scoring position, both of whom scored when senior Elliot Inzama punched a double down the leftfield line to give Monroe a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, with two on and no outs, the Tiger hitter chopped a tailor-made double play ball to short, the shortstop's feed to second went into rightfield, scoring the tying runs and putting the go-ahead run on third. Donovan Boles delivered the 5-4 win with a walk-off SAC fly to deep right-center.
