Tuesday night saw the Dulles District return to action after spring break as the 2021 State Champs hit the road to take on an upstart Lightridge team. Both teams tabbed righties for the start, with Broad Run going with junior Mitchell Young and Lightridge starting sophomore Mason Sproat.
Broad Run took advantage of a series of miscues in the top of the first to open up an early lead. A dropped third strike, multiple walks, a few errors, and a Fin Sullivan RBI single allowed the Spartans to plate 4 runs in the frame. The Spartans added to the lead in the second, using walks and errors and then a pair big blows on back to back pitches in a Sullivan 2-run double and a Thomas Young 2-run home run, giving Broad Run an early 10-0 lead.
The momentum in the game shifted at this point as Lightridge went to the bullpen and a pair of relievers were able to quiet the Spartan bats down, only allowing one more tack-on run. The Bolts bats started to come to life, scratching a run in the third, adding 3 more in the fourth with a Jacob Park (Maryland-Eastern Shore) 2-run knock, and 2 more in the fifth on Donovan Newell's second RBI single of the game. After five, the Bolts trailed 11-6.
That deficit was what they were still facing with the bottom part of the order coming up in the bottom of the seventh. After getting a runner on, Jonathan Cedeno singled to right to drive in a run. Cedeno scored as Newell reached on an error, and the Bolts had turned the lineup over and cut the deficit to 11-8. Freshman Ben Drinkwine delivered his second knock of the game to make it 11-9 with 2 outs, and Broad Run went to the pen for senior ace Andrew Market (James Madison). On a full count pitch, junior Mikey Sullivan punched a double just over the third basemen's head, scoring two runs and tying the game at 11.
Both teams scratched a some runners in the eighth and loaded the bases in the ninth, but neither team was able to score. Market escaped both jams for Broad Run and sophomore Jimmy Burpoe came in for Aidan Knapp, who had been spectacular in relief for the Bolts, and got out of the threat.
Unfortunately, in the top of the tenth, Lightridge seemed to run out of pitching. Walks combined a few wild pitches gave the Spartans the lead, and then Mitchell Young delivered the final blow with a 2-RBI single, giving Broad Run a 16-11 lead that Market would hold onto for the win.

Lightridge
Ben Drinkwine OF / 3B / Lightridge, VA / 2026Drinkwine is 6-1 with an athletic frame that has some strength in the lower half. Hits from a slightly open athletic stance. Hands stay tight and short, slightly uphill path, set up for a pull approach with some present extra base power, but did show the ability to adjust to pitches out of the zone and go up the middle. |
Donovan Newell OF / RHP / Lightridge, VA / 2024Newell has a lankier athletic frame, in the outfield, he is quick and covers some ground, arm strength is about average. At the plate, hits from the left side from a taller open stance. Very short level swing, line drive hitter with an all fields approach, mostly just tries to barrel balls to get on base and then use his speed as a weapon. Good baserunner, traditional leadoff type hitter, doesn't show a ton of power but will get on base a ton. |
