VA/DC Rankings Riser Spotlight: Trey Ludy

Ludy had a big day at the Upperclass State Games where he showed ability to produce barrels at the plate and filled up the strike zone, while getting up to 88 mph. Ludy is one the most coveted uncommitted players remaining in the VA/DC 2023 class.

VA/MD State Games

6-foot-1, 160-pound lean lanky frame. Capable projectable during batting practice, the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 93 mph. (69.6 mph bat speed average). (22.1 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced stance with a controlled active load, then uses a controlled toe tap stride. Bat speed was present, used a long level swing plane and balanced finish. Found some barrels with loud contacts. Aggressive approach. Solid confident while in the infield, recorded position velocities up to 82 mph; had a clean natural exchange, fluid in control footwork, and consistent hands. Laterally, movements were athletic and fielded the ball out front. Decent accuracy to the bases, used a compact arm action with a ¾ slot. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.19. On the mound, using a longer arm action he showed some arm speed from a ¾ arm angle. Tilt-and-topple type pitcher and uses some effort. Has a low balance point and even shoulders. Lands square with balanced finish. Threw his fastball 82-84 mph with a max of 85 mph; showed arm side command and slight running sinking action. (Max spin 2287; Avg 2192). Showed decent command and deceiving late action on his curveball (71-73). (Max spin 2396; Avg 2374).

VA/DC State Games

Ludy is 6-0 with a lankier athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly closed balanced athletic stance, low leg kick stride on line, loads back. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, quick to the ball, uphill swing with some strength at contact, showed a good approach using the whole field, some power present in the gaps, exit velocity was 87. In the infield, rounds ball and fields with a wider base and average hands. Works through the ball to a clean echange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, infield velocity was 81. Ran a 7.20 60 yard dash. On the mound, he throws from a three-quarters arm slot, long free quick arm action and some effort to his delivery. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders are level and closed, lands closed with a fall off finish. Fastball was 81-83, with some late armside run to it. Curveball was 69-71 with good armspeed and sharp 11/5 break to it, some shape to pitch already, chance to tighten into a swing and miss pitch. Change-up was 75 with good armspeed and some late run to armside.
