Justice Bigbie, C, Grassfield, 2017
Hit from a balanced/athletic stance that was tall. Smooth load back. Slight toe tap with a short stride. Maintains balance throughout the swing and had a very good lower half. Took a very good approach during the round and showed a fluid rhythm. Bat path was level and had extension. Had a line drive stroke that was gap-to-gap with power potential. Possessed excellent bat speed with an exit velocity of 90 mph. Behind the plate, throws from a high 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action. Throws were accurate and had some carry and had a positional velocity of 73 mph. Showed the ability to have very quick hands on exchanges. Footwork would be better with some anticipation. Would also increase positional velocity. Was athletic behind the plate. Blocked well. Showed the ability to move laterally. Pop times were 2.08-2.29.
Chase Miller, C, Great Bridge, 2018
Hit from a balanced stance that was tall. Had a minimal load back that was smooth. Took a short stride that stayed on line. Maintained balance throughout the swing. At times landed on the outside part of the stride foot. Used the lower half very well. Took a good approach during the round with a small/quiet rhythm. Bat path was short and level. On occasion, initiated the swing last which caused him to sweep through the ball. Line drive stroke. Excellent bat speed with an exit velocity of 88 mph. Behind the plate, threw from a high 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action. Throws were accurate and had carry at times. Hands were quick on exchanges but footwork suffered from a lack of flexibility. Blocking was adequate but will also improve with enhanced flexibility. Footwork was average but has time to improve. Had a positional velocity of 2.06-2.29.
Robby Tew, C/SS, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, 2018
Lefty who hits from an athletic stance that is stacked on backside. Slight load back with an arm bar that causes his bat to drag. Modified leg kick stride that stays on line. Maintains his balance throughout swing. Rhythm gets stiff and choppy. Bat exit velocity of 74 mph. Swing path works uphill at times. When he stays level through the zone he produces consistent line drives. Pull hitter with potential for pull power. In the field, threw from a high ¾ arm slot that was short. Throws had some accuracy and had a positional velocity of 72 mph. Showed average hands that had clean exchanges. Footwork was slow and on heels. Behind the plate, threw from a high ¾ arm slot that was quick and loose. Throws had some accuracy. Footwork was clean and quick. Positional velocity of 73 mph. Clean blocking fundamentals. At times got narrow when he dropped to block the baseball. Pop times were 2.07-2.19.
Reid Williams, C, Nansemond River, 2016
Hits from a slightly wide stance that is crouched and balanced. Load back with stiff rhythm. Strides to toe that stays on line gets down before he starts his swing. Lower half explodes to the baseball. Average balance. Quick bat with an exit velocity of 82 mph. Level swing path that drives the ball when he stays through with extension. Line drive hitter. Behind the plate, throws from a high ¾ arm slot that is quick and short. Throws had some accuracy. Positional velocity of 72 mph. Quick, clean footwork that stays on line and works through the ball. Quick, clean exchanges. Clean blocking fundamentals. At times falls forward with chest. Pop times were 2.03-2.13.
