TPG III: Catcher Breakdown

In late-July, over 30 players took part in our Top Prospect Games III showcase at Bryant & Stratton College in Virginia Beach. Today, we begin our detailed breakdown of that event with the primary catchers:
Jerry Barnes III C / 3B / First Colonial, VA / 2022Barnes III is 6-2 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open relaxed athletic stance, leg kick stride on line, short load down. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short and quick to the ball, uphill swing with some strength at contact and good extension through the ball, showed a pull preference with power present to pull side, still has room to add power as he gets stronger, exit velocity was 98. Behind the plate, very quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short quick arm action, position velocity was 74 and pop times 1.97-2.06. Very accurate with his throws. Showed versatility taking balls at third where his arm was 79. Ran a 7.41 60 yard dash. |
Jack Gagen C / 2B / Independence, VA / 2022Gagen is 6-1 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open athletic stance, two tap stride on line, short load back, has rhythm to his set-up. Hips rotate completely and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing with some strength at contact point, showed a good approach working primarily gap to gap, some doubles power present, exit velocity was 87. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 68 and pop times 2.12-2.26. Some accuracy on his throws. Ran a 7.58 60 yard dash. |
Tucker Mueller C / OF / New Hanover , NC / 2022Mueller is 6-1 with an athletic frame that has some lower body strength present and plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open relaxed athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, goes straight to the ball, slightly uphill swing with some strength at contact point, showed a good approach working primarily gap to gap, natural loft in his swing generates carry, exit velocity was 89. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 70 and pop times 2.01-2.18. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Ran a 7.28 60 yard dash. |
Jacob Park C / 1B / Lightridge , VA / 2023Park is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has strength present and some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a taller open stance, low leg kick stride on line, smooth load back. Hips rotate with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing with some strength at contact point, showed a good approach using the whole field, some power present to pull side, exit velocity was 80. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 68 and pop times 2.12-2.29. Showed accuracy on his throws. |
Preston Robbins C / 2B / Manchester, VA / 2021Robbins is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has strength present and some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, short stride on line, smooth load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short and quick to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing, showed a good approach working gap to gap, natural loft in his swing, exit velocity was 85. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 70 and pop times 2.00-2.15. Showed some accuracy on his throws. |
