In late June, over sixty uncommitted players from the 2024-2025 classes descended upon Fred Nats Stadium in Fredericksburg, VA for one of the most talented summer events that we have hosted in the Mid-Atlantic.
Today we are going to take a deeper dive into six uncommitted catchers/outfielders from that event.
Summer State Games Spotlights: Uncommitted Underclass
Catchers & Outfielders
Charlie Brinkman C / OF / Pro 5 Academy VA, VA / 2024Another 2022 Future Games alum. Brinkman is a versatile, athletic defender with offensive upside. Brinkman spent some time behind the plate and in the outfield at Underclass State Games, as well as Future Games. Behind the plate he is a solid receiver, works almost exclusively from a one-knee down setup, but does a nice job getting up and in line on throws. It is a strong arm that was 81 mph at Fred Nats Park and has carry through the bag. His 6.88 60 and athleticism will allow him to potentially man some corner outfield and show off his versatility this spring at Pro 5. High contact rate, but the quality of contact can be streaky at times. Has shown some lift in the swing with his power showing best in both gaps. Brinkman's high motor and run tool will allow him to stretch some extra bases on hits and he is just as good of an in-game runner as he is a watch runner. Strengths: Athleticism, arm strength, versatility Areas of Improvement: Consistency of quality contact |
Stephen Hawkins C / OF / Cosby, VA / 2025Thin athletic 5-foot-9, 145-pound frame. There is just something about Hawkins' game that I really enjoy when I watch him play. He has that quiet confidence in the way he approaches the game. Quick hands, short path, simple setup to stride, and level path. It is a very quick, short load and gets direct to contact at stride. With his quick hands and how well he rotates into the swing, those two things should allow some time for pitch recognition and swing adjustability. The arm is average behind the plate. Throws are in line, but could benefit from some added arm strength, that I am sure will come as he adds strength to the thin frame. Strengths: Barrel is on plane, quick hands, confidence Areas of Improvement: Adding physical strength to frame |
Jacob Moore OF / 2B / Cosby, VA / 2024Toolsy, athletic, strong. Three words to describe the 2024 outfielder from Cosby. Moore has been a recent transition from the dirt to the outfield so there is going to be some learning curve there, but the tools and ceiling are undeniable. Turned out a 6.59 60 on Swift lasers, was 87 from the outfield, and showed his pop at the plate during BP and in game. There is still polish left to add to his game, but the combination of physicality and athleticism make him a very intriguing 2024 that is still on the board. Strengths: Run tool, wrist strength, bat and hand speed, body. Areas of Improvement: Pitch selection, zone awareness |
Edwin Sanchez OF / 2B / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2024What was my first look at Sanchez, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound outfielder offers some intriguing pieces to his game. Lean strength to the frame and athleticism to have some versatility in the outfield. Turned out a 6.94 60 on Swift lasers. Slight crouch at the plate, simple setup, and short quick path through the zone. The barrel accelerates through the zone. He keeps his hands inside at contact and has shown the ability to cover the inner half, in game. Average arm strength from the outfield with lateral range. Strengths: Short to contact, field usage, in game offensive production, athleticism Areas for improvement: Arm strength |
Jonathan Underly C / OF / Bishop Ireton, VA / 20245-foot-10, 160-pound compact frame. Underly is a very intriguing offense first 2024 out of Bishop Ireton. Simply put, he hits. The swing can be kind of stiff and upright at times, but he produces. He has quick hands and plenty of bat speed through the zone and has no problem handling velo. Has a knack for the barrel that shows up in BP and in game. Defensive profile is still TBD. Has a slightly above average run tool, he has been as quick as a 6.96 60, and has average arm strength from the outfield. The arm strength is average, but it is a quick exchange and release. Strengths: Hand and bat speed, offensive production in game, athleticism Areas of Improvement: Lower half usage, arm strength, swing adjustability |
Finn Whipple OF / RHP / Douglas S. Freeman, VA / 2025Whipple has a long 6-foot-1, 160-pound frame with tons of room to fill out. This is a high ceiling athlete with some loud tools. Whipple, in my opinion, is a bat over arm and has a corner outfield profile. He has above average bat and hand speed with some raw power potential at the plate. The setup is fairly upright and the swing path can get uphill at times. Whipple has well above average arm strength from the outfield and carry on throws. His long lanky frame looks like it will carry good weight and some of the loud tools will get even better as he adds strength. Strengths: Physicality, athleticism, hand and bat speed Areas of Improvement: Lower half usage, offensive consistency |
