Monday night in Ashburn saw Broad Run play host to a hot Stone Bridge team in a mid-season Potomac District matchup and rivalry game. The Bulldogs would score four runs in the first and then hang on to win the game, 6-4.
Broad Run sent freshman lefty Connor Hale to the mound to start the game. Shane Gallahan worked a leadoff walk and then stole second base. After a passed ball, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Hentz to open the scoring. Junior Paul Moore was up next mashed a home run to right-center to extend the lead. After a single and a strikeout, Trevor McNicholas snuck a line drive just inside the leftfield foul pole for a two-run home run, and after the top of the first, Stone Bridge led 4-0.
In the bottom of the first, Broad Run answered as leadoff hitter Anthony Puma reached on an infield single against Stone Bridge starter Matt House (Shenandoah). Puma would come around to score when Ryan Gorey doubled past third base and the ball was misplayed in leftfield, letting Puma take the extra base. House shut things down there and after one, the Bulldogs led 4-1.
Stone Bridge would add another run in the second when Hentz delivered a two-out RBI single and one more run in the third as McNicholas also delivered a clutch two out RBI single to extend the lead to 6-1.
Broad Run loaded the bases in the third inning but was unable to cash any runs in to cut into the deficit, and House would ultimately go five innings, leaving with a 6-1 lead. Broad Run brought sophomore Justin Rebok in from leftfield to pitch in the fourth inning, and he would hold Stone Bridge scoreless the rest of the way.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, facing a 6-1 deficit, Broad Run was able to put two runners in scoring position against Bulldog reliever Brennan Speier, and Hale delivered a two-run single to center. The Spartans would add another baserunner before Speier got out of the inning with Broad Run leading 6-3 heading to the seventh.
Rebok worked a quick top of the seventh, and the Spartans came to the plate needing three runs as Stone Bridge made another pitching change, sending junior Lawson Calhoon to the mound. An error and a wild pitch put the leadoff man into scoring position, and Gorey delivered his third hit of the game, driving in a run and cutting the deficit to 6-4 with no outs in the inning. Calhoon would get a pair of well hit fly outs to center and a strikeout to end the game with a final score of 6-4, extending Stone Bridge’s Potomac District record to 7-0.
For Broad Run, Hale took the loss going 3 IP, 6 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 3 K while also going 2-2 with 2 RBI at the plate. Rebok went 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 HBP, 1 BB, 3 K. Gorey was 3-4 with a 2B and an RBI. Eric Davis was 2-3.
For Stone Bridge, House got the win with 5 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 K while also going 1-3 at the plate. Hentz was 1-3 with 2 RBIs. Moore was 1-3 with a home run. McNicholas was 2-3 with a home run and 3 RBIs.
