With Fall Signing Day behind us and the 2017 season essentially complete, PBR VA/DC will begin to look to look ahead to upcoming spring and the 2018 season in our Spring Forward series, which will run on the website in the coming weeks. In this series we will focus primarily on players that we have seen this year and are looking forward to seeing again in 2018, these posts will not have anything to with prospect rankings.
Today, we continue our Spring Forward series with our second way-too-early look at the 2018 Major League Baseball amateur draft. After a strong 2016 draft class, the 2017 draft only saw two prep players from Virginia or DC drafted, Bassett County catcher Nathan Perry and Halifax County lefty Andrew Abbott. Today we will look at the primary position players who might garner some draft consideration in the spring.
Adam Hackenberg C Miller School
Hackenberg is a Clemson commit and has long been considered one of the top position player prospects in the Virginia/DC Class of 2018. He has a strong athletic frame and a big arm. He has a consistent sub 2.0 pop with accuracy and a strong arm behind the plate. At the plate, he has a quick bat with real power present already, hitting two home runs in Jupiter in October, including one that was 102 off of his wood bat. His arm also plays up when he gets on the mound and his 7.16 60 time is solid for a future middle of the lineup bat and elite athleticism is in his bloodlines with a brother in the NFL.
Hackenberg is currently the clear top draft prospect in Virginia/DC in his class, but the class of 2018 has a handful of other position players who should garner consideration and will have a shot to play pro ball at some point in their careers. Look to see scouts out to check out these players at some point this spring:
