SCOUTING REPORT
3.19.16: Cook is an athletic infielder with good footwork at shortstop. He has good range and takes good angles to the ball. He has average hands and a good exchange to go with an above average arm. At the plate, Cook hits from the right side from an athletic stance with a leg kick stride and a short load back. He has a good lower half and maintains balance throughout his swing. He works uphill with fast hands and he gets good extension through the baseball. Cook has a pull approach with gap power to his pull side.
Q&A
What made VMI the right fit for you?
+ The coaching staff had a huge impact on my decision. I have always enjoyed taking on challenges and VMI is a challenge which pays off in the end. VMI is the best school for me because it will prepare me the best for baseball and the rest of my life.
What was the recruiting process like?
+ The summer going into my junior year is when things really picked up. I had several offers by the time school started and I committed to Liberty University at the end of the summer then after further discussing the matter with my family I de-committed from LU and committed to VMI and Coach Hadra. The recruiting process was amazing because it gave me the ability to travel up and down the east coast and tour schools and meet great coaches. All together it was a great summer!
What other schools did you consider?
+ Liberty Univeristy, VCU, High Point, Campbell, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Duke
What were key factors you were looking for during the process?
+ I want to continue to get bigger in the weight room so I can come right in and contribute my first spring. I also have been working on driving the ball to all fields. I am trying to get more athletic all-around and at the same time stay healthy.
What are your goals now before you step on campus?
+ In terms of personal goals, I hope to elevate my game by spending a lot of time in the weight room and getting stronger and throwing harder. I realized that academics has been a huge part of all of this for me and has opened many doors for me and I hope to keep working hard in the classroom and getting good grades. I want to help my high school team win a district championship and maybe even more.
What have you learned from your time with your high school / travel organization?
+ My high school team is ran like a college program. We take things very seriously and the way Coach Tomlin runs the program at LCA it is almost impossible to not get better! I have learned you have to compete everyday to hold your spot in the line-up. Travel ball has taught me that there are studs all across the country and there is always people working just had hard as you.
What advice do you have for players going through the recruiting process?
+ The main thing I see with people who don't have offers yet is they begin to press. The best way to preform at a high level is just be relaxed. Have fun and play your butt off and things will happen for you.
