Scouting Report
VA/DC Scout Blog
Stieg is a recent Virginia Tech commit and is one of the top prospects in VA/DC in the 2022 class and he showed that in this game, on the mound, in the outfield, and at the plate. Defensively, he played centerfield, he gets good breaks on balls and takes good routes, ran a few balls down over his head that I didn't think were going to get caught. Arm has some carry and should develop into a very strong arm as he gets stronger. At the plate, has a short, fast swing with a whippy bat, good balance to his lower half and he is barrel aware. Lots of projection left to him and simple swing, has a chance to have a very good power/speed combination that would make him a prototypical two or three type hitter at the next level. On the mound, throws from a three-quarters arm slot, short loose quick arm action and normal to some effort to his delivery. Stays on line, lands square and falls off as he finishes. Fastball was 81-85, touching 87 one time. Was 83-85 in the windup, dropped to 81-82 when he was in the stretch. Pitch has downward angle and late tail to it. Showed a change-up at 73 with some armspeed and late fade. Curveball was 67-70 with good armspeed and sharp 11/5 break.
Freshman Free Showcase
Stieg is 6-2 with a lanky frame, he hits from the right side from a more upright balanced athletic stance. Short stride on line, short smoot load back, good quiet rhythm to set up. Violent lower half with some balance to swing. Very short to ball, quick hands that stay inside, fast bat with extension through the ball, slightly uphill path. Line drive swing with gap power and potential for more as he fills out, exit velocity was 85. In the outfield, good feet and gets behind the ball well, fields it with above average hands and pushes through into his transfer. Quick clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short loose quick arm action, outfield velocity was 80. Ran a 7.12 60 yard dash. On the mound, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a longer free, loose arm that is quick, generates velocity with normal effort. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands on line with athletic finish, very smooth simple delivery. Fastball was 76-78, touching 80, with heavy armside run. Change-up was 67-70 an thrown with some armspeed, pitch had heavy fading action. Curveball was 64-66 and thrown with some armspeed, pitch had late 11/5 break and has a chance to be really good.
