Mid-Atlantic State Games: Underclass Quick Hits Part III

Last weekend, well over 150 players from Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and DC descended on War Memorial Stadium in Hampton Roads, Virginia for the 2022 Mid-Atlantic State Games. Players took part in a showcase workout on Saturday and a game throughout the day Saturday and Sunday. Some of the Region's top committed prospects were also on the field on Saturday night for the 2022 Committed Game.
Now we take a look back at some standout moments from uncommitted underclass players that were in attendance.

Alex Boyd SS / RHP / Mills Godwin, VA / 2026Compact frame, athletic, solid defender up the middle, and a nice feel for the barrel at the plate. Switch hitter that is a contact bat from both sides. Really like the way Boyd always seems to show up in game.

Nate Butler OF / RHP / Powhatan, VA / 2026Athletic 5-foot-9 frame. Simple approach, early toe tap load, and hands set back at separation. Contact bat with a level path and line drive tendencies. It is a lower finish and the hands stay inside. Average runner on the watch and plays a tick better in game.

Colton Hicks SS / RHP / Independence, VA / 20266-foot, lean and projectable frame. Two-way potential with the ability to spin a breaking ball for strikes. I really liked the simple setup and swing at the plate. Hicks showed some adjustability in the swing, as well as the ability to spray line drives and hard contact around the field. Good frame with room to add weight and yet another strong young talent out of Independence.

Drew Markey RHP / 3B / Bishop O'Connell, VA / 2026Markey has a lanky 5-foot-11, 155-pound frame. Lower hand break, longer arm swing, and filled up the zone. Markey induced early, weak contact and stayed out of the middle of the zone.

Matthew McCauley 1B / LHP / Mountain View, VA / 2026Quickly becoming one of my favorite 26's that I have seen. McCauley had one of the better, if not the best, two way weekends for underclassmen. My first look of McCauley was at the Canes Scout Day two weeks ago and he took another step in the right direction at the State Games. Some physicality from the right side of the plate. Had two hits in game, including a loud double. On the mound, McCauley offers a different look and the ability to spin a breaker that has swing and miss tendencies. He has some body awareness at the plate and on the mound and am excited to see where this Mountain View 2026 trends.

Hampton Morris RHP / 1B / Mills Godwin, VA / 20265-foot-11, 165-pound frame. LHH/RHP with some strength in the swing and up to 81 on the mound. Works from a higher slot on the mound, strike thrower that worked in the zone, and is a lower effort arm. At the plate the hands drop slightly on load, level path, and hands get back inside with some pull side tendency to the swing.

Will Yow SS / RHP / St. Anne's-Belfield , VA / 2026Yow has a lanky 5-foot-9 frame with broad shoulders and room to add good weight. At the plate he has a bigger lift to load, stays over his backside, and has some solid timing with his front foot. While there are some moving pieces with the hover lift, he has shown on multiple occasions that ability to get it down on time, with balance, and delivers the barrel to contact out front. Ran a 7.04 60 and turned out a 6.92 a few weeks back. Intriguing 2026 out of the Charlottesville area.

Aidan Zovak OF / 2B / Riverbend, VA / 20255-foot-10, 158-pound athletic outfielder. Really liked the look of this Riverbend 2025 at the plate. Strong lower half, controlled intent in the swing, and has a presence at the plate. Showed some adjustability in the swing and has done a nice job using the whole field in approach when we have seen him in game.
