Monday-The Jefferson Forest Cavaliers Baseball team are a very confident bunch. With a 12-1 overall record, and a perfect 5-0 slate in the Seminole District, the Cavs looked to continue their winning ways at Amherst County on Tuesday.

Junior righthander Ezra Baier was on the bump tonight for the Lancer’s verses junior lefthander Cody Whitten of the Cavs, in a game that saw some fireworks, from both clubs, early and often.

Sean Burch started the game with a four ball work, Whitten reached on another base on balls, followed by a double to the left-centerfield gap by third baseman Indiana Hall (Concord), scoring Burch. Catcher Camdyn Smith (JMU) rifled a ground ball to shortstop bringing Whitten home, and Zach Peek (Winthrop) drilled a single to left field to plate Hall. Peek would also score on an infield error adding to the Cavs four run inning.

Not to be left behind, Nathan Loyd, the speedy lead-off man from Amherst, beat out an infield hit. Blaine Cunningham executed a flawless hit and run single moving Loyd to third and Travis Wood chipped in a sacrifice fly to score Loyd. Catcher Christian Campbell reached on an error, bringing Baier to the plate. Baier worked the count full, fouled off four pitches, and ripped a two RBI double down the left field to top off a three run inning.

Through the middle innings, Whitten and Baier dueled. Both hurlers blanked the other team for the next four innings as a light rain coated the field. Baier struck out seven employing a sharp breaking curveball and pinpoint location. Whitten also sat down seven on strikes, allowing six hits in his complete game performance.

In the visitor sixth, Baier began to tire. Juniors Morgan Marshall and Zach Coates collected back to back, one out hits for the Cavs in the sixth, followed by a Burch clutch single to score both runners. In the seventh, Hall shot a single up the middle, Smith walked, and both scored infield error.

The battling Lancer’s continued to fight despite trailing by five runs in the final frame. Logan Posser and Lloyd reached base on walks and the fans began to stir. Cunningham crushed the first pitched he saw down the left line, certain to score both runners, however, Sean Burch’s amazing full out, backhanded, driving catch ended the uprising and the Cavs took the win back to Bedford. Jefferson Forest is still undefeated in the conference as the season nears its end, can anyone stop the Cavs?
