On Sunday I made the trip to Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy to watch the two semifinal games and the championship game of the DCSAA tournament. The two semifinal game matchups included Maret vs. St. John's College Prep and Wilson (DC) vs. Gonzaga.
The first game was a continuation of the Maret vs. St. John's game that was attempted to be played the few days prior. The game picked up in the bottom of the first inning. Maret sent 2022 Andrew Catron back out to the mound and he was opposed by St. John's senior Ethan Mishra (VCU). This was a low scoring affair on both ends, as Catron and Mishra had strong outings. St. Johns would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a Flynn Howard groundball that would bring in Quinn Allen (ECU) to make it 1-0. In the top of fifth Maret would answer with one of their own off the bat of Chip Krese. The freshman would double to deep right field, but that would be the last time Mishra would allow a Maret run to cross. In the bottom half of the fifth Brayden Martin (FSU) would single through the left side to make it 3-1 and the Cadets of St. Johns would never look back. Final score held at 3-1 with St. Johns advancing to the championship game.

In the second semifinal game Wilson (DC) took on Gonzaga. This was another low scoring affair, as the arms for both sides were pretty strong. Wilson would start senior Sam Alswang (CCSU), who would eventually give way to Kai Leckszas in the fifth inning. Gonzaga started junior Noah Potholm. Potholm went the distance for the Purple Eagles. We were scoreless until the fourth inning when UVA commit Marcus LeClair led off the inning with a bolt out of right field to make it 1-0 Gonzaga. In the bottom half Alex Ozuna-Nunez, who reached via line drive single, would score on a passed ball to even it up at 1-1. Gonzaga would answer right back with another solo homerun, this time off the bat of Future Games alum and Virginia Tech commit Nick Morabito. His homer out of center field made it 2-1 Purple Eagles. Once again Wilson would answer. In the bottom of the sixth the Tigers would take advantage of a Gonzaga miscue and tie it up at 2-2. That score would remain until the bottom of the seventh when Jeffrey Coakley reached via a one out single. He would go on to swipe second base and then enters Jack Wallis (Haverford). Wallis got a breaking ball up and turned it around for a walk off line drive to center field. Wilson advanced to the championship game by a final score of 3-2.

Finally comes the championship game between the St. John's Cadets and the Wilson (DC) Tigers. The Cadets sent senior Quinn Allen to the mound and he would be opposed by Mansfield commit Jeffrey Coakley, who would get the ball for the Tigers. There would be no scoring until the top of the third inning when Jack Wallis would hit a sacrifice fly to center field that would score Coakley. St. Johns answered with two of their own in the bottom of the fourth when Dom Valis (Towson) hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored the speedy DM Jefferson (Notre Dame). Valis' sac fly was followed up by a Flynn Howard RBI single through the right side to make it 2-1 Cadets. In the fifth Brayden Martin (FSU) doubled to left field to score Casey Gibbs (VCU) and extend the Cadets lead to 3-1. The Cadets would go on to secure the 3-1 win and Quinn Allen would get the win, with Michael Hippchen (Wilson College) coming on to get the save while working a quick efficient two and two thirds innings of relief. The Cadet's championship run was capped off by a DCSAA MVP trophy awarded to VCU commit Ethan Mishra and I am anointing Brayden Martin as the Offensive MVP of the tournament, as he came through with multiple clutch hits for the Cadets.
