The 2024 MLB Rule 4 Draft, better known as the First-Year Player Draft or Amateur Draft, has concluded. The Draft began on Sunday night and continued on Monday and Tuesday. Coming off of a year that saw two Virginia prep players selected in the first round, the first Virginia prep First Rounders since 2005, we expected a slight tick back off of that going into the draft. That being said, it was yet again a strong draft year for the Commonwealth and DC. For the fourth year in a row, we had a Virginia high school player selected in the first two rounds, as well as numerous college players that graduated from Virginia and DC high schools getting selected.
The first player off the board was Virginia shortstop and St. Christopher's alum, Griffin O'Ferrall, to the Orioles with the 32nd overall pick in the Prospect Promotion Incentive round. O'Ferrall is the third member of the 2019 Prep Baseball Future Games Team Mid-Atlantic to be drafted, with former teammates James Wood (Nationals) and Jackson Merrill (Padres, 2024 MLB All-Star) having already reached the Major Leauges this season.
O'Ferrall's Virginia teammate and Frank W. Cox HS alum Ethan Anderson was also selected on opening night by the Orioles with their 2nd Round pick. The first Virginia prep player of 2024 went off the board two picks after Anderson as Freedom (South Riding) outfielder Griffin Burkholder was selected by the Phillies with their 2nd Round pick. Burkholder is a Prep Baseball Super 60 alum, was a standout at the 2023 Prep Baseball All-American Game, and the number 1 ranked player in the VA/DC Class of 2024 Rankings.
Day Two of the Draft was a busy day as well as a slew of players were taken in the 3rd through 10th Rounds. A highlight of that group was William & Mary RHP and Yorktown 2021 alum, Nathan Knowles, who was the fourth member of the 2019 Future Games Team Mid-Atlantic roster to be selected. Also, Freedom (South Riding) picked up their second drafted alum as North Carolina outfielder Casey Cook was taken in the 3rd Round. Frank W. Cox matched Freedom with their second 2021 alum to be drafted, James Madison outfielder Fenwick Trimble.
