For the next two weeks we will roll out our Preseason Power 25. Three staff members voted on their version of the thirty best teams in the Preseason Power 25, with a possibility of 90 total vote points for each team. We will release three teams per day for the first week and then move to two teams per day once we reach the Top 10 next week. Voting for preseason teams centers more around the depth of talent on that team, as well as where it stacks up within their region/area, as opposed to strictly predicting schedule outcomes.
Generally, larger schools and classifications have a greater depth of player talent on roster. However, once the season begins and records begin to take shape, the Power 25 will be adjusted as needed. In addition to that, we will debut our Private School Top 10 around April 1st and Small School Top 10 around mid-April.
We head back to the Richmond area for the #16 spot. The Cosby Titans may have more depth on the mound than they have had in recent years, as well as have some talented upperclassmen in the front half of the lineup. Take a look at the full preview below.
#16 Cosby
While the Titans graduated a few players in numbers last season, they return most of their production, and potentially add some talented young players. Giovanni Briggs (Randolph-Macon) and Jack Weight (William & Mary) should be the workhorses on the mound. Briggs simply pitches and Weight has made some big jumps to be a frontline arm and be the shut down guy that they have lacked for the past year or two. Offensively they have depth and experience, starting with an all-state type of shortstop, Ayden Schnarrs (VMI). Schnarrs should be joined in the lineup by Seth Truesdale (Richard Bland), Brendan Hall (EMU), Jack Hinton (EMU), Stephen Hawkins, and Greer Cabanban. Two underclassmen that will make their presence known in 2024 is sophomore Michael Williams (Virginia Tech) and freshman Blake LaMattina. Williams will fit in the rotation and be a pivotal piece to the pitching staff, while LaMattina looks to fill a void in the infield and will bring athleticism, versatility, and offensive firepower to this Cosby team. This Cosby team has the talent and depth to make a push in 6A.
Final Thoughts:
"It seems like guys like Schnarrs, Briggs, Truesdale, Weight, etc etc are sixth year seniors. They have been in that program on the varsity level for a while and that experience and potential leadership should be key for the Titans. There is some new blood coming through, mostly by way of Blake LaMattina. They have depth on the mound, some offensive depth, and upperclassmen to lead the way. Those three things are what usually drive teams to win championships."
