With the completion of our second year of coverage of the High School season in Virginia and DC, we are excited to announce the first All-Prep Baseball Report VA/DC Team. Unlike All-Conference, Region, State, or other teams, we have not placed a cap on how many players at each position can make the team. We are simply choosing to recognize players who have put together outstanding seasons. 2016 in Virginia and DC saw many hitters with good years, but the story of the year was a deep group of dominant pitchers, as was evidenced by the fact that there was a no-hitter thrown nearly every night somewhere in our coverage area this spring. That theme will show in this year’s All-PBR VA/DC Team, as well over half of the honorees threw significant innings for their team.
2016 PBR VA/DC Player of the Year:
Jake Agnos, Battlefield (East Carolina)
Agnos was named the All-Met Player of the Year by the Washington Post and the 6A State Player of the year by VHSL as he led the Bobcats to the State Championship game where they finished the year as the 6A Runners-up. On the mound, he opened the season with a seventeen strikeout no-hitter and continued his dominance all spring. He went 11-0 with a sub-1 ERA and 146 strikeouts. He also batted leadoff for the Bobcats and hit well over .350 with 14 stolen bases.
Finalists for Player of the Year (Alphabetical order)
Michael Blanchard, Nansemond River (Old Dominion)
Blanchard was the ace of the Warrior’s staff and helped lead Nansemond River to the 5A State Championship. He was named the All-Tidewater Player of the Year and finished the season 10-2 with a 1.42 ERA and wins over Grassfield, Western Branch, Hickory, Indian River, and Potomac.
Bryson Booher, Fort Chiswell (Concord)
Booher was a dominant two-way player and the key piece of Fort Chiswell’s run to the 1A State Tournament. At the plate, he hit .494 with three home runs and 35 RBI. On the mound he was the team’s ace, going 9-2 with a 1.34 ERA and 114 strikeouts.
Harry Brown, Greenbrier Christian (James Madison)
Brown anchored the middle of the Gators’ high-powered offense and hit .471 on the season with 14 doubles and 30 RBIs.
Khalil Lee, Flint Hill (Liberty)
Lee was named the Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year and hit .471 with six home runs while also pitching to a 7-0 record while piling up 87 strikeouts and a 0.33 ERA in just 43 innings on the mound.
Grey Lyttle, Hanover (High Point)
Lyttle was part of the Hawks’ loaded pitching rotation, throwing in the number 1 spot all season. He finished the year with an ERA under 0.67 and a 8-0 record. He also hit over .350 with six home runs and 34 RBIs for the 4A State Champions. Lyttle was also named the All-Richmond Metro Player of the Year.
Matthew Pinson, Maggie Walker
Pinson was the 2A State Champion’s ace and top hitter, winning the State Semifinal game and he entered the State Tournament hitting over .400.
