Over the coming months, Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC will take a look back at the 2015 season for each school that finished the spring in the final 2015 Power 25. In each article, we will not only recap the successful seasons of these 40 schools, but highlight the individuals who drove that success and preview what the outlook is for each team in 2016.

30. oakton cougars

 

Season Recap:

Oakton had a strong 2015 that saw them finish as the Concorde Conference runners-up and advance to the 6A Northern Region Tournament. The Cougars had the misfortune of drawing Battlefield in the first round and were eliminated before they could make a deep run in the tournament. Oakton finished the season with a 17-6 overall record, with three of their losses coming to State Runners-up and rival Chantilly.

Key Performers:

+Ryan Davis: (C, 2017) Davis who is Ranked #41 in the 2017 Virginia/DC Class, stepped up and offered a major contribution to the Cougars both offensively and defensively and was named 2nd Team All-Conference.

+Connor Jones: (RHP, 2015, Lafayette) Jones was the Cougars’ ace and earned All-Conference and All-Northern Region honors as his outstanding career at Oakton came to a close. 

+Joe Rizzo: (3B, 2016, South Carolina) Rizzo was named the 6A State Player of the year and is Ranked #1 in Virginia/DC and #10 Nationally in the 2016 Class, hit .606 on the season with 7 home runs while emerging as one of the best hitters in his class Nationally.

+Toma Shigaki-Than: (RHP, 2017) Shigaki-Than who is Ranked #33 in the 2017 Virginia/DC Class, emerged as a quality arm during his sophomore season and earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors.

2016 Outlook:

The Cougars lost six senior starters from the 2015 team to graduation, so there will be a lot of internal competition for playing time this spring. With Rizzo to anchor the offense and Davis back to captain the defense and a stable of talented young arms led by Shigaki-Than and Owen Lamon (RHP, 2017) Ranked #36 in the 2017 Virginia/DC Class, the Cougars should again be one of the better teams in what will be a very deep 6A Northern Region this spring.
