2025 Top 10 Prospects (November Update)

The 2025 class has taken shape since many of these players were freshman and sophomores. With a strong contingency of players (8 out of 10) attending some of the biggest signature Prep Baseball events on the west coast and also the nation. Every player but two, have either been invited and participated in such events as the West Coast Games, the West Coast ProCase and even more significantly the Future Games at LakePoint Sports in the Atlanta suburb of Emerson, GA. The latter event is where the coming out party for many of these exceptionally talented players took hold. Whether it was in front of 30 MLB organizations at the West Coast ProCase, the West Coast Games (40+ college recruiters) or the grand daddy of them all the Future Games, where 425 D1 recruiters ascend to, every last week of July in hot and humid Georgia! Whether an offer was made from the 425 recruiters in attendance or just the mere fact that by being selected to play for Team Utah, these players were exposed and subsequently offered by schools that in a few cases were not in attendance, but every one else saw them and it upped the stakes to get involved and recruit these kids and build a relationship with them, before someone else did! Many of the schools in this ranking, have had numerous phone calls with myself and countless text conversations to vet and come to the decision to make an offer, or schedule campus visits to eventually make that life changing offer! 

At the top of the board, we have the #1 prospect in the state in Juab HS multi-sport star Austin Park, the PBR Utah Player of the Year, the Gatorade Player of the Year and the Deseret News “Mr. Baseball” award, after a call from one of their decision makers, it came down to two players, one I knew like the back of my hand and the other not at all! 

Yes they called and call Prep Baseball, not other resources that can be biased, to vet players for awards and recruiting opportunities. Some, after committing way too early, felt they had it made, so didn’t see the point in letting others help them down the path to success and ultimately it led to heartache in some cases, when offers were pulled and being told they didn’t need to be involved with the culture. 

The vast majority, if not all attended an open ID event to get themselves on the radar with myself and subsequently invited to in-state “invite only” events, which led to their ultimate selection to represent the Beehive State and have the privilege to call themselves #SwarmingBees 🐝, in front of the whole country! 

For those undecided, yet talented players who are trying to make up their minds to get involved with Prep Baseball and Utah in particular, look no further than this breakdown…85% of all committed players over the last four years have attended at least one statewide event…72% have attended more than one event, and 60+% of every D1 commit, attended more than two events! Is this how you attain your ranking? NO! 

But by being involved and immersing yourself in the culture we have established in the state, it only creates a strong hold on your place in the hierarchy of Utah players and allows myself to get to know you more and your family and create a relationship with the players, which allows me to really KNOW the player and his family, so that when that college recruiter calls and wants information about a player, we become their best resource. 100’s of texts and dozens of phone calls are made between myself, the player and their parents, and a different kind of relationship ensues…one that with my 1,000+ contacts all over the country, that were established over a 30 year period, as a former D1 head coach and major league scout for the Angels and Brewers, the smart ones took advantage of this opportunity, with the ‘24 class setting a state record with 96 eventual college commits! So if you’re ranked beyond 10 or ranked beyond 20, that’s nothing to sneeze about, because as I said, almost 100 players got the opportunity to play at the next level!!

The amount of resources for FREE beyond the event or showcase registration price, that I provide at my expense, if the player wants it bad enough, not only do I get to know the player and his family, but they get to understand who I am, where I’ve been and who trusts me, to ultimately find the right fit and coaching staff for that player and his families personality! The amount of institutional knowledge of who these programs and coaches are, and yes the programs know me, which allows for a transparent and fluid recruiting situation. 

One can look no further than the U of Oregon and countless other top schools and nationally ranked programs, that their head coaches instruct their recruiting coordinators to not call anyone else besides Prep Baseball Utah to vet the player and get a tried and true major league evaluation, before moving on to other resources about the player. Can the buck start or stop with the culture we have created in Utah with colleges? The answer is a resounding yes!

SCOUTING DIRECTOR (BIO)

Scholzen comes to Prep Baseball after serving 9 years as the "Four Corners" Scouting Supervisor with the Milwaukee Brewers (2011-2020). Prior to his run with the Brewers, Scholzen worked for the Los Angeles Angels for 11 years (1999-2010), serving in the same capacity as the "Four Corners" Scouting Supervisor (UT, WY, So-ID, Las Vegas, AZ, CO, NM and El Paso). Scholzen received a 2002 World Series ring for his contributions as a scout with the Angels. 

With the Angels, Scholzen created an Angels Scout Team, in which he coached the following MLB players: Kris Bryant, Kevin Gausman, Greg Bird, Tyler Wagner, Aaron Blair, Joey Rickard, Donn Roach, Johnny Field, Taylor Cole, Andy Burns and Paul Sewald to name a few.

During his run with the the Angels, Scholzen also served as the hitting coach for the Angels rookie ball affiliate in the Pioneer League, the Orem Owlz, helping guide the Owlz to the 2005 and 2007 Pioneer League titles, which earned Jeff two more championship rings.

Brandon Wood, SS, Angels 2003, 1st Rd ~ Efren Navarro, 1B, Angels 2007, 50th Rd ~ Donn Roach, RHP, Angels 2010, 3rd Rd ~ Tyler Wagner, RHP, Brewers 2012, 4th Rd ~ Payton Henry, C, Brewers 2016, 6th Rd ~ Ryan Aguilar, 1B/OF - Brewers 2017, 31st Rd ~ Scholzen also had an additional 3 players added to various clubs 40 man MLB rosters over the years.

2019 (14th Rd) draft pick, RHP-Paxton Schultz from Utah Valley U, is currently in AAA (Buffalo Bisons) with the Toronto Blue Jays, and former 40 man Brewers rostered RHP (Utah Tech) just recently returned from Korea and signed with the NL Champion Arizona Diamondbacks and is in AAA with the Reno Aces.

Prior to becoming a professional scout, Scholzen served as the head coach at Southern Utah University between 1993-1997. At the time, Scholzen was the youngest Division I head coach in the country, when he was first hired at 24 years old. The Southern Utah baseball program was dropped after the 2012 season. While coaching at Southern Utah, Scholzen served as the hitting coach for the Alaska Goldpanners in 1995, as they won the Alaska League Championship. Scholzen also recruited and coached World Series RHP-Ryan Jensen of the San Francisco Giants, who would earn a top 5 finish for NL Rookie of the Year in 2022. Scholzen and Jensen had the unique opportunity, to be on opposing sides of the ledger, when Scholzen's Angels and Jensen's Giants squared off in the 2002 MLB Fall Classic.

Scholzen also had the pleasure of coaching Jensen's roommate and back up catcher, Kyle Turner who has worked in professional/major league baseball for 24 years. Kyle currently is in his 14th season with the big league Kansas City Royals and serves as the clubs Head Athletic Trainer. Turner was instramental, while a young player for Scholzen at Southern Utah, in introducing Scholzen to his first wife, the late Heidi Dalton Scholzen, who passed away in December of 2014. A native of Utah, Scholzen played at Hurricane HS and was twice named 1st team All-State and an AAU HM All-American, before moving on to Utah Valley CC and Eastern Oregon University, earning All-Conference honors on three separate occasions. Scholzen played in the Angels’ organization in 1991.

Scholzen was married to his late wife Heidi for 20 years and their union produced four children - McKyla 28, Miranda 25, McKenzie 23 and the couples only son, Grant Scholzen 19, played 2B/3B at D1 WCC school, the U of the Pacific (Pacific Tigers) on scholarship, in 2024 and transferred to Salt Lake CC.

After Heidi's passing in 2014, Scholzen married Cami Macias Scholzen, a widow herself and the same age as Heidi and the couple now have been married 9 years. Between both families, Jeff has 3 grandchildren and 5 step grandchildren (8 total). The Scholzen's reside in Hurricane, UT in the bottom left SW corner of the state, near the most iconic and scenic national parks in the country.
