Semler's Prospects to Follow: 4.22-4.27
April 30, 2024
Over the course of the season, North Texas Scouting Director, Max Semler, will be out scouting some of the top draft prospects in the Lone Star State. Semler has served as an area scout for four major league teams spanning the last 30 years and now joins the Prep Baseball Texas Staff. Today, we look at some of Semler's reports on the prospects to follow that he has seen so far this season.
High Follow: scout this player. Present tools are there, he can enter pro ball and hold his own.
Low Follow: some present tools with a lot of projection or with college players limited upside. This does not mean this player is not a prospect, not a priority look to start the year.
Pocket Follow: no carrying tool presently to go out and play professionally or at a Major D1 program. But, does things on the baseball field that attract your attention. This type of player needs strength, needs to mature physically or with a pitcher…velocity needs to take a jump.
FOLLOWS
Degan Kubat RHP / JJ Pearce , TX / 2024Low Follow Strengths: RHP with FB worked 94-95 in short burst outing. Occ tai action. Worked both sides of plate with FB. Solid delivery and arm action. Showed quality secondary action in warm ups. Aggressive with FB. Arm speed present Weaknesses: What is pitch ability, can he start and get deep in game? Struggle to land secondary in game. DNS change Summation: HS RHP with good physical build and room for future strength. Solid delivery and arm action with arm speed present. Pitched with plus FB in short burst outing, 94-95. Showed ability to work both sides of plate with FB. In warm ups, showed both slider and CB, solid spin with CB showing depth. Threw both in game, struggled to land. Velo spike this spring. Worst case scenario RHR with plus FB, hoping for command of at least 1 secondary pitch. If he can start and hold velo with firmed secondary definite prospect. Hopefully, he gets opportunity to start in playoffs. Low Follow presently, if he proves he can hold velo in start and land secondary in game, moves up to low follow . If he can that, worth draft and follow this year.
