DFW Rising Stars ID: Quick Hits

Brandon Gowins
Texas Scouting Director

TEXAS - On Saturday, March 30th, we hosted the DFW Rising Stars ID at Lake Dallas HS. This event featured 2028 & 2029 players in a pro style workout. The players ran 60's, threw from defensive positions, then took BP. Following BP, we went straigh into bullpens where TrackMan data was recorded. Overall, it was a good day with quality players throughout. Today, we take a look at some of the standouts on the day.

Travis Fiedler SS / 3B / Ridge Point, TX / 2028

Fiedler was a JFG participant last year, and we were already big fans, but he showed up on Saturday much more physical and it translated into his performance. He ran a 7.04 60, and that is only going to get better as he gets stronger. He was solid with the glove and has all the actions you look for. At the plate, the LHH has good natural rhythm in the box and showed the ability to drive the ball the other way with authority. I think the hit tool will continue to get better with increased strength.  He also hopped on the mound and showed good command of his low 80’s fastball. He has been higher in game this spring, and the arm works. He also showed good feel for a fading changeup. Overall, a really good day for Fiedler.

Braylon Hubbard SS / SS / Duncanville, TX / 2028

It was my first time seeing Hubbard, and he made a great first impression. The bouncy SS/RHP from Duncanville started his day by running an event best 6.82, which is flying for an 8th grader. He is going to run harder as he gets stronger. He showed really good hands at short, and as he refines his technique he could become a really good defender. At the plate, Hubbard shows good bat speed, and he had an impressive exit velo of 95 mph.  The swing can get long, but it is all there for it to be an impact bat. Hubbard ended his day on the mound, and showed good command of his fastball that topped out at 80. He also showed feel for a changeup that shows promise. Hubbard will be one to follow as he gets ready for his HS career.

Matthew Heredia SS / RHP / Liberty Christian School, TX / 2028

Heredia really impressed us in the fall when we saw him for the first time. A few months later, Heredia has gained some physicality and his game has continued to go to the next level. Heredia is a fluid athlete who moves well laterally, and is really good with the glove. He has true shortstop actions and had the best arm of the day, throwing 86 across the diamond.. At the plate, Heredia has gotten stronger and drove the ball with authority to all fields. He has some natural rhythm and flow to the swing to go with good bat speed. Heredia also showed well on the mound. His fastball had good metrics, showing a lot of horizontal movement to go with some serious sink. His slider also has some sweeper attributes and it will be fun to watch that develop. Heredia has baseball IQ as well, and it is evident watching him move on the field

Matthew Patterson SS / RHP / Homeschool, TX / 2028

Patterson showed up this spring much more physical than last year. He had one of the better overall days, displaying his strength on both sides of the ball. At the plate, Patterson hits with a stronger lower half and has good rhythm. He impacted some baseballs with authority to the backside and did a good job of keeping his barrel in the zone for a long time. He has the makings of an impact bat in the middle of a high school lineup.  He showed a good arm defensively as well, topping out at 81 mph. He showed good hands and actions with the glove, the foot speed will ultimately determine his position, but the hands and arm should keep him on the left side.

Hudson Brown OF / LHP / China Spring, TX / 2028

Brown really stood out on the day, showing the potential for avg. tools across the board in centerfield. He ran and impressive 6.95 60, which you would think would get faster with some strength.  He showed a strong, accurate arm from the outfield, topping out at 84 mph. He bounced around effortlessly out there, and should be able to stay in center for a while. At the plate, the left-handed hitting Brown showed a short, powerful swing that produced a best exit velo of 90.7 mph, and he stayed in the big part of the field for most of his round. Brown showed well in all facets on the day.

Kyler Reynolds C / SS / Flower Mound, TX / 2028

It was the first time we had seen Reynolds on Saturday and he did well. The right-handed hitting catcher has a strong frame that is built to be a catcher. He did well behind the plate during the defensive drills, as he received well and had good pop times ranging in the 2.18-2.22 range. The arm is okay right now, but as that gets stronger, he should be a solid catch and throw guy. At the plate, Reynolds had some hard contact and registered a personal best of 90.4 mph. There is some rawness to the swing, but the bat speed and strength are there. Reynolds had good energy all day, and had the demeanor of a catcher.  The Austin native is moving to Flower Mound, and will be a Jaguar next year.

Mason Brower RHP / OF / Keller, TX / 2028

The LHH infielder/RHP had a good day on both sides of the ball. He has a wiry frame right now that should be able to get a lot stronger as he matures. He showed a good plan in the box, with an approach geared towards the big part of the field. He sprayed line drives all over the yard. His swing is short, and should be able to handle velo as he gets older. He showed good actions on the dirt, moving well laterally. The arm was avg. and should continue to get stronger.  Brower was also very impressive on the mound. He has a very clean arm stroke, and sat in the upper 70’s with movement and a low effort delivery. Brower is another one that showed feel and baseball IQ throughout the day. Looks like Keller is getting another talented player next year.

Henry Kuenstler RHP / OF / FORNEY H S, TX / 2029

The only PO of the day and one of the youngest in attendance, Kuentstler definitely stood out during his pen. First thing, Kuentstler had a plan for every pitch and wasn’t up there just throwing. The mound presence and IQ were apparent. It is a free and easy arm, with a shorter arm swing that he repeats well. He had good sinking action on his fastball when he kept it down, with some arm side run. When he eliminated his pause at the top, he was a strike thrower. He also threw two breaking balls. One was a spike curve that showed promise, and the other was a slider that he showed better command of. He also had a tumbling changeup that had the right action. He has a frame with a lot of potential to stack on good weight, and it will be fun to watch his progression.
