Westwood Tops Leander

Westwood and Leander High school closed out their final tournament before beginning their respective district schedules. After two straight scoreless innings, Leander jumped to a 1-0 lead until Westwood's small-ball, and later a grand slam put the Warriors up 5-1. Tacking on a single run in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings allowed Westwood to cruise to victory 8-2
Mason Montgomery, the 37th ranked Class of 2018 in the state of Texas and Texas Tech commit started on the mound for Leander and only went two innings. In those two innings, Montgomery’s fastball was electric and had a noticeable late jump. Montgomery’s athletic 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame worked exclusively from the stretch. If Montgomery can tighten up his breaking ball and make it a viable 2nd option he could be an active member of Texas Tech’s bullpen next season, and that’s if his fastball doesn’t land him in the 2018 draft.
Uncommitted 2019 Westwood catcher Ian Cox powered the Warriors with a grand slam in the third inning and later ripped a hard single. Cox is a good sized catcher that made solid and accurate throws to second. At the plate, he uses an open stance and is very still with his hands before showing a smooth swing. Cox was aggressive at the plate at times but also able to work deep count. Impressive 2019, worth keeping an eye on.
Westwood’s uncommitted 2019 starting pitcher Mason Flood put up a solid effort, tossing 5 innings and only allowing a single run to cross the plate. Flood is an imposing figure at 6-4 with some room to grow in his frame. Flood doesn’t overpower with his fastball but goes after every hitter and doesn’t shy away from contact. He also showed a curveball with a 12-6 break on it.
