THE WOODLANDS, TX - Thursday night was a matchup of two cross-town rivals, The College Park Cavaliers traveled a little over four miles to Scotland Yard to take on The Woodlands Highlanders. Only one game separated these two teams in the District 12-6A standings. Taking the mound for College Park was 2018 RHP Luke Trahan, a Dallas Baptist recruit, while The Woodlands sent 2018 LHP Steven Beard to the mound.
College Park got the scoring started in the top of the first when Travis Washburn led off the game with a base hit, moved up on a Michael Loggins single, then stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Isaac Rivera would single home Loggins to put the Cavaliers up 2-0
2018 OF Shane Sirdashney answered for The Highlanders in the bottom half of the first inning when he sent the fifth pitch he saw from Trahan deep into the left field tree line for a solo home run. Senior Vince Secrest, a Lamar recruit, would follow with a double off the centerfield wall. Several batters later, senior Zach La Confora would double home Secrest.
Both starters would settle down and put up zero’s in the second inning, but The Woodlands would take the lead in the bottom of the third. Jarred Miles led off with a single to right field, La Confora followed with a double off the center field wall, then Avery Ortiz would score Miles on an RBI-groundout. The Woodlands 3, College Park 2.
With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, College Park’s starting pitcher and No. 26 ranked player in Texas, Luke Trahan, helped his own cause with a towering solo home run to left field off a hanging curveball. All tied up at 3. The Cavaliers rallied again with two outs in the sixth when catcher Josh Trahan hammered a double down the third base line to drive in Luke Repka from first. College Park 4, The Woodlands 3.
The Highlanders would even the score in the bottom half of the sixth on an RBI-groundout by Ryan Tackett. And once again the Cavaliers would take the lead in the top of the seventh when centerfielder Eric Bordovsky blasted a home run to left field off Woodlands reliever Cole Sichley. College Park 5, The Woodlands 4.
On to the bottom of the seventh they went. La Confora reached on an error and Avery Ortiz single through the middle. After a flyout, The Highlanders had two on and one out, bringing freshman shortstop Drew Romo to the plate. Romo, a left-handed hitter and No. 56 Overall ranked player in 2020 class, sent a slicing fly ball, deep down the left field line for a double. The ball then kicked into the left field corner, and Coach Eastman wasted no time waiving both runners to the plate for the walk off 6-5 victory. With the win, The Woodlands improves to 16-7-1 overall (10-2 District). The loss drops College Park to 8-4 in District. These two teams will meet again on Friday at College Park, first pitch is slated for 7:00 pm.
