It's been a long, action-packed fall season throughout Texas. Much has happened over the course of the two-plus months since the launch of PBR Texas, all of which is reflected in our comprehensive 2018 Texas Top 100.
This is the first PBR Texas rankings with updates to come in the early spring, after our three winter events and before the high school season kicks off. To see our complete list of events click here.
The talent level in this state is second-to-none, always known for producing power arms. The 2018 class is no different with 8 of the top 10 players being pitchers with high-end stuff. Today, we take a look at six shortstops ranked in the top 30 of our 2018 class.
+ Jordan Groshans (Magnolia HS). The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Kansas recruit ranks #8 overall and #1 at his position. The slick fielding shortstop has athletic range with long strides, clean arm action with good carry, solid glove action and exchange. The right handed, middle-of-the-order hitter, has good rhythm, advanced bat speed, and solid barrel awareness. He crushed a couple of balls into a stiff breeze on sunday, one for a double, the other was caught in left field. Most recently we saw Groshans launch a home run to left field on an inside fastball thrown 90 mph.
+ Ty Coleman (Midland Lee HS). The 5-foot-9, 160-pound Texas A&M recruit ranks #15 overall and #2 at his position. Strong body with well-defined lower 1/2, shows strength in the hands and quick twitch on defense and base paths. Defensive actions are advanced, makes the play to back-hand side and shows arm strength with carry. Makes the run thru play with athletic actions and ability to throw from different arm slots. Showed good speed on base paths stealing 2nd and 3rd. Offensively shows a balanced swing with level path and strength in his hands. In game 1 he had 3 hits, 2 of which were off of curveballs he hit crisply through the 6-hole.
+ Alec Carr (Kempner HS). The 6-foot, 185-pound Texas recruit ranks #18 overall. Carr is an athletic player that has been clocked running a 6.6 60-yard dash, also possesses power at the plate as he hit numerous home runs this summer. The two-sport athlete played football this fall.
+ Dru Baker (Tomball Memorial HS). The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Texas Tech recruit ranks #21 overall. Baker is a middle of the order hitter with good pop that can play all three infield positions. Baker also plays Quarterback for his football team at Tomball Memorial HS.
+ Mateo Gil (Timber Creek HS). The uncommitted SS/RHP is 6-foot-1, 175-pounds with an athletic frame. Gil comes in ranked #25 in our overall ranking, and our highest ranked uncommitted player. He showed off quick twitch, athletic movements at shortstop along with a strong throwing arm. He ranged to both sides with grace, and has a nice set-up at the plate with a short, line drive stroke.
+ Max Marusak (Amarillo HS). The 6-foot, 175-pound Texas Tech recruit ranks #30 overall. The all-around athletic shortstop has elite speed and defensive actions and shows pull-side pop at the plate. Marusak played football this fall.
