San Antonio Preseason ID Quick Hits: Upperclass
January 13, 2023
SAN ANTONIO, TX - On Sunday January 8th, the PBR TX staff traveled to Marion High School to host the San Antonio Preseason ID. The event consisted of players from all high school classes participating in a pro style workout. They started by running a 60, using swift performance timing gates, then moved into the defensive workout. The day was capped off with a round of batting practice followed by pitchers throwing bullpens. Today, we take a look at some of the upperclassmen that stood out on the day.
Upperclassmen
Trip Ancheta RHP / SS / Clyde, TX / 2024Rankings StateRank: 167 / POS: 40
Ancheta had a really good day on Sunday at Marion HS. The Jr. from Clyde looked really good defensively on the infield, showing soft hands and good lateral quickness. He has more than enough arm strength for the left side of the infield, and profiles best at third base. At the plate, he has a short, compact swing geared for line drives. Where Trip really stood out is on the mound. The 6’ RHP showed a quality fastball that sat 87-88 for the duration of his pen. It showed good life with an average IVB over 18’’. Ancheta really spun his breaking ball on Sunday. He threw it in the mid 70’s with good depth and late bite to it. It plays in the zone and will generate plenty of swing and miss out of it. Ancheta has a good frame and will continue to get stronger. He is primed for a big Spring/Summer. |
Zachary Gingrich OF / RHP / Smithson Valley, TX / 2024One of the best 2 way performances on the day belonged to Gingrich. The Smithson Valley Jr. started his day off by running a 6.83 60, showing good athleticism. He was 86 from the OF as well showing an accurate arm with good carry. Offensively, Gingrich had a good round of BP. The LHH had a max exit velocity of 97.3 and drove a couple balls out of the park. There isn’t a lot of wasted movement in the box. Starts with a slight leg kick as he loads his hands and then has a short powerful swing that will lead to a lot of extra base hits. On the mound, Gingrich showed the ability to be a two way guy. His fastball Sat 85-88.1 and his last three were his three fastest pitches. He filled the zone up with it, and had good riding life up in the zone, and showed some ASR when he kept it at the bottom. He also threw a curveball that had a slurve shape to it in the low 70’s velo range. He showed feel for a changeup as well that was thrown in the mid to upper 70’s. Gingrich does a lot of things well on the field, and I expect a big year from him. |
Luke Holt RHP / OF / New Braunfels, TX / 2024The other 2 way standout Sunday was Holt. The Jr. From New Braunfels had a great day in all aspects that he participated in. He started his day off with a 6.92 60 showing good quickness. He was 85 from the outfield with an accurate arm with really good carry on the ball. At the plate, Holt has some quick twitch and a lot of strength that helped him produce an event best exit velo of 100.3 mph and the farthest hit ball at 384 ft. He doesn’t have to sell out for those numbers either, it was a controlled swing with good rhythm and balance throughout. And to round out his day, Holt had a really impressive bullpen. He has an uptempo delivery with a very clean and efficient arm action. His fastball sat 85-87, but he has been up to 90 in bullpens this winter. He also showed off a good slider that he threw in the mid 70’s with a max spin rate of 2579 rpm’s. He showed a changeup as well that he threw with good arm speed and showed the ability to kill the spin. Holt is a really good athlete who does a lot of things well on the field, and should garner a lot of attention this year. |
Will Broderick C / OF / Alamo Heights, TX / 2024Our staff has always been a fan of Broderick, and he showed up Sunday showing significant gains and improvement across the board. The physical backstop showed off good athleticism for a catcher with a 7.05 60. He followed that up with a very impressive defensive workout. He was 90 from the outfield, but he looked really good on his throw downs to second. He was 1.95-2.05 on his pop times with good feet and a strong accurate arm. He is a good receiver behind the plate with quiet actions and strong wrists. At the plate, Broderick showed some power potential from the left side. He had a max exit velo of 96.7 and max distance of 363 ft. He has a pretty simple operation in the batter’s box, allowing him to repeat his swing consistently and use his strength and athleticism to impact the baseball. Broderick has everything you look for in a frontline catcher. He can defend, offers power from the left side of the plate, and is a tough kid. Broderick is poised for a breakout season. |
Connor McCabe OF / Ronald Reagan, TX / 2024Arguably the best athlete at Marion HS on Sunday, McCabe wasted no time opening some eyes when he ran his 60. He ran a 6.53 with a 1.57 10 yd split showing the athleticism to play centerfield. In the box, McCabe is a LHH that has a short swing with a lot of punch behind it. He has above average bat speed and rotational acceleration allowing him to drive the ball all over the field with authority. He had a max exit velo of 94.2. He gets the foot down early and uses his hands well, but there is more power in there as he learns to sync everything up. McCabe’s athleticism is evident in everything he does on the field. |
Chad Pantuso SS / OF / SA Johnson, TX / 2024The Jr. from SA Johnson was another one whose athleticism really stood out on the day. Panutso started his day running a 6.75 60, showing the athleticism to stay up the middle. Defensively, he was fundamentally sound on the infield fielding every ball cleanly while showing good range. At the plate, Pantuso starts with hands high, but as he starts his swing they get in a good hitting position. He has above average bat speed, and had a max exit velocity of 94 mph. He drove everything in the big part of the field and stayed gap to gap, showing a sound approach. Pantuso is part of a really talented Johnson team this year, and we are excited to get out and see him this spring. |
Rohan Naik C / 3B / Antonian College Preparatory, TX / 2023Another catcher who had a good day was Naik. The Sr. from San Antonio showed high level defensive ability behind the plate and offers extra base hit potential in the batter’s box. He is a solid athlete for a catcher, running a 7.19 60. Behind the plate, the athleticism carried over with efficient footwork and a quick transfer. He registered pop times between 1.99 and 2.08. It was a good strong accurate arm that should help limit a running game. At the plate, he starts with an open stance and is looking to drive the ball to the pull side. It was more of a line drive approach, but there is more power to be unlocked in the swing. Naik is a high academic kid that is going to be able to stick behind the plate. |
Luke Sasser OF / 2B / San Antonio Reagan, TX / 2023The Sr. Outfielder from powerhouse SA Reagan had a really good day on Sunday. He showed off an above average arm from the OF with good carry and accuracy. He was up to 88 mph from the OF and it profiles in RF. At the plate, Sasser had a really good day showing some power potential from the left side. He had a max exit velo of 95.4 and drove multiple balls to the wall to the pull side and up the middle. He doesn’t have a lot of wasted movement, he uses a slight toe tap to get his swing going, and then uses his quick hands to drive the ball. Sasser goes to one of the best programs in the state, and we will see him multiple times in the spring. |
Caden Roy C / 1B / Reagan, TX / 2024Another SA Reagan product that really had a solid overall day was Roy. The Jr. backstop showed good catch and throw skills and the ability to impact the baseball offensively. Roy has a lean, muscular build with a strong lower half that should help him hold over the course of the season behind the plate. Defensively, he had pop times in the 2.01 - 2.16 range and all of his throws were on the bag. He showed good receiving skills and handled velocity well. Offensively, Roy has a repeatable swing without much wasted movement. He has good bat speed that allows him to drive the baseball with authority, as he had a max exit velocity of 95 mph. He showed power potential to his pull side and centerfield. Roy and his Rattler teammates are looking for another deep run this year in the playoffs. |
