On Saturday, January 21, Prep Baseball Report and its staff converged on Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, to evaluate players from all over the state at The North Texas Prospect Games.

The day began with each player going through a full pro-style workout, then continued with a game between two teams. The PBR staff was able to record stats and video on each player in attendance. PBR will continue to work to be the #1 news source for all of high school baseball across Texas.

Below is a complete breakdown of the 2017 and 2018 infielders. Each one has an updated profile with stats, a player write-up, and video from the event.

infielders

+ Mateo Gil, SS/RHP, Timber Creek HS, 2018
Texas Christian commit. 6-foot-1, 175-pound, projectable, athletic frame with well defined lower-half and broad shoulders. Gil, who committed to TCU the week after the event, put together a great day. He registered the top fastball velocity, top infield velocity and second best exit velocity. At shortstop, Gil has smooth rhythm, soft hands, fluid footwork and quick exchange. Gil showed advanced arm strength with carry and accuracy at 91 mph across the diamond. He made the run-through play and threw from different arm angles with athleticism. Offensively, the right-handed hitter starts from a tall stance. Loads with smooth rhythm to create good separation as he lands, then explodes on the ball with good leverage and bat speed. He squared up balls to the whole field during batting practice and had an exit velocity of 92 off the tee. Gil is currently ranked #25 in Texas and #179 Overall.

 

+ Jose Gutierrez, 1B/C, Lamar HS, 2018
Dallas Baptist commit. 6-foot-3, 230-pound, strong frame with broad shoulders and definition. Gutierrez, who is currently ranked #31 in the 2018 Texas Top 100, showed all the makings of being one of the top left-handed hitters in the state. He starts from a tall, relaxed stance and loads slowly with rhythm into a high leg-kick. Lands into his launch position with athleticism and leverage. Took an impressive batting practice with high-level presence, showcasing his power by driving balls deep to the pull side, including one home run. He had an exit velocity of 96 mph off the tee. Defensively, the first baseman has good footwork, clean exchange, average hands and shows good feel around the bag. He throws with a long arm swing at 76 mph across the diamond. He ran a 7.75 second 60-yard dash.

 

+ Jack Sigrist, SS/2B, Plano West HS, 2018
6-foot, 180-pound frame. Segrist, an uncommitted junior, showed well at the event, especially with his speed and his bat. He began the day running a 6.96 second 60-yard dash. Offensively, the right-handed hitter has a tall set-up in the box, rocks back to load as he turns his front hip inward with a coiling motion and slight arm bar. Lands into an athletic launch position with his lower half, good weight transfer as he rotates to contact. Showed gap-to-gap power during batting practice with good strength in his hands at contact. Sigrist posted one of the best exit velocities of the event at 91 mph off the tee. At shortstop, Sigrist has average footwork and hands with a clean exchange. Gathers the ball well to his midline. Shows the ability to field and throw on the run. Threw 79 mph across the diamond.

 

+ Ren Reynolds, SS/2B, Kilgore HS, 2018
5-foot-9, 140-pound, wiry-strong frame. The right-handed hitter starts with an athletic, balanced setup with good flex in his lower half. Slow load to get started with smooth rhythm into a leg kick as he rotates to contact. Drove the ball well during batting practice, then showed pop during the simulated scrimmage, hammering a home run to left field. His exit velocity was 84 mph off the tee. At shortstop, Reynolds has good all around fundamentals. He moves his feet with smooth rhythm to set-up with his hands in front, then funnels the ball into the mid-line of his body with a quick exchange and clean release. Plays through the ball well, has good range and an accurate arm. Threw 75 mph across the diamond and ran a 7.35 second 60-yard dash.

 

+ Nic Costas, 2B/OF, Bullard HS, 2018
5-foot-10, 155-pound frame. Offensively, the right-handed Costas starts from a slightly open stance, turns inward to load then lands square into his launch position. Short hand path as he rotates to contact with line drive power and finishes the barrel. Good approach during batting practice, drove some balls into both gaps. Exit velocity was 75 mph off the tee. Defensively, Costas has natural instincts and a good first step, flashing range to his left and right. Throws with some carry across the infield at 76 mph. During the game, Costas ran the bases with aggressive instincts and fast twitch lateral movements, suggesting that he plays faster than his 7.4 second 60-yard dash time.

 

Best of the Rest (Alphabetical)

+ Sam Boese, C/3B, Prestonwood Christian Academy, 2018
6-foot-2, 195-pound, sturdy frame. The right-handed hitter starts from an open stance with good rhythm in his hands and a slight bat wrap. Has a quick, toe-tap load with a short stride before rotating his lower half through contact. Shows a level hand path, strength at contact and a line-drive approach during batting practice with an exit velocity of 84 mph off the tee. On the infield, Boese has a deliberate rhythm and exchange as fields the ball. Flashed quick footwork to his backhand side with a clean exchange. Does a good job of working his feet into his throws after an early hand separation. Threw 77 mph across the diamond. Ran a 7.89 second 60-yard dash.

+ Robert Husbenet, 3B/RHP, Richland HS, 2017
5-foot-11, 200-pound frame with broad shoulders. Husbenet, a right-handed hitter, starts from a tall, balanced stance. Rocks inward to load his weight back before picking his front foot up for a small stride. Line drive approach during batting practice with some strength at contact and an exit velocity of 83 mph off the tee. Defensively, Husbenet has corner infield footwork and plays low as he fields the ball. Longer exchange into a long, ¾ slot across the diamond at 81 mph. He ran a 7.62 second 60-yard dash.
