Reagan Wins 6-4 Over Lake Travis

Travis Sthele, RHP, Reagan HS, 2020
Texas commit. The sophomore closed out the game with two innings of relief, allowing no runs on two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. His fastball was 87-90, his slider was 79-80 with short late break and 11/5 shape. 

 

Cal Carver, LHP, Reagan HS, 2018
Wichita State commit. Went four innings, allowed four runs on four hits, six walks, and struck out five. The left-hander works from a high-¾ slot with tilted shoulder and a slight wrap in the back. His fastball started out at 85-87 in the first inning, settling into the 82-84 range in the third and fourth. His slider varies in shape between 2/8 and 1/7 shape, and can be sharp with downward action at 74-75 mph.

Brett Baty, 3B/RHP, Lake Travis HS, 2018
Texas commit. The right-hander was 89-91, his slider was 81-82 with lateral break, his curveball was 77-78. Only went one inning, allowed two runs on two hits and three walks.

Bryce Weisinger, RHP, Lake Travis HS, 2018
Texas A&M Corpus Christi commit. The right-hander put together four and two-thirds innings of relief, and kept Lake Travis in the game. He allowed one unearned run on four hits, six walks, and six punchouts. Works from a ¾ slot with a long arm arm stroke. His fastball was 86-88, his slider was 74-76, and touched 78 once.

John Fraga, LHP, Reagan HS, 2018
Uncommitted. Closed the door on a Lake Travis rally in the fifth when he entered the game with the bases loaded, no outs. Got two punchouts and a pop up to end the threat, allowed only one run on a walk. His fastball was 82-84 with arm side run. His changeup was 73-74 with a couple of arm side misses. Spun a curveball during warmups but did throw one during the game. 

 

The top of the order set the tone for Reagan all night as Seth Morrow (Wichita State) and Porter Brown (TCU) each had three hits and scored two runs. Morrow had two doubles, a triple and an RBI. Killeen, Martin, Sanchez and Caven each collected an RBI.

Madison 6 – Churchill 3

Derek Klosowski, RHP, Madison High School, 2019
Uncommitted – Unconventional timing disruptions, a leaping drive toward home plate, a tight, quick arm circle and aggressive arm-speed has allowed the 5-10 170-pound right-hander produce a very solid season on the mound. His fastball, which clocks in at 84-86 T87, has late action and appears to jump late in its path to the plate. He offers up a snappy 11/4 shape curveball at 68-72, that generates a healthy dose of friendly contact or empty swings up in the zone. Klosowski keeps hitters off time by varying his leg lifts and arm circles. Nearly throwing a complete-game, which was spoiled by an errant throw on a potential game-ending double play, Klosowski’s pitch limit forced him out of the game after 6 2/3 innings. He tallied 7 strikeouts, while giving up 3 runs on 8 hits. He also had two hits on the evening, including an RBI double.

Jack Neely, RHP, Churchill High School, 2018
Texas commit – The 6-9 230-pound ace of the Churchill staff looked strong coming off of a complete-game outing six-days earlier. His fastball sat steady in the 90-92 range with hard, late sink and some sharp arm-side action on his two-seam fastball. He showed depth to both of his breaking balls, the 12/6 curveball at 72-76 mph and a hard biting slider at 82-85 mph. Neely was strong through four, but after struggling to get close calls, giving up two consecutive singles, two passed balls, and a throwing error in the field, he was on the hook for a 5-run, one earned, fifth inning. He threw 102 pitches and his final pitch of the evening as a 92 mph fastball.

Greg Morales, 1B/OF, Churchill High School, 2020
Uncommitted – Morales showed some big time power when he cranked a 2-run home run in the sixth inning. The 5-7, left-handed hitter has good balance in the box and has a patient approach. Morales is compact with his load, get through his hips quickly, keeps the barrel in the zone, and meets the ball on plane. He shows good hands and barrel command. 

Carlos Flores, RHP, Churchill High School, 2018
Houston Commit – The 6-3 210-pound Flores has an athletic frame, but inconsistency in his violent delivery forces scattered command of his 89-90 T91 mph fastball and 65-70 mph curveball. He does induce some swings, generating hard contact or missed barrels. Flores threw 1 inning, allowing a walk, an RBI double, and recording one strikeout.

 

Cleburne Takes Game One Over Crowley

CLEBURNE, TX – Game one for the three games series was in Cleburne’s new stadium. Cleburne started 2019 LHP Willie Rangel (Texas Tech) and Crowley started 2018 RHP Garrett Chappell. Both pitchers had strong first innings with Rangel's FB 84-86 with sink, touched 87 once  and his slider was 77.

Chappell’s FB was 82-84 and touched 85 a couple times with sink also. He also worked a changeup at 77 with depth.

The difference in the game was the bottom of the fourth when 2020 C/3B Slayton Day led off with a double to left field for Cleburne. Three pitches later Day scored on botched sacrifice bunt by Marcus Guereca 2019 1B Uncommitted. Chappell limited the Yellowjackets to just two more runs in the fourth.

Rangel continued to baffle the Crowley Eagles by only giving up one hit over seven innings. He had four walks, nine strikeouts, was still 82-85 in the seventh, and had an RBI knock.
