Inside the 2025 Rankings - MIF

Brandon Gowins
Assistant Scouting Director

TEXAS - The 2025 National Rankings were released  last week, and no surprise, the state of Texas was well represented with 26 of the 250 players residing in the Lone Star State. This class is well rounded and has a good mix of impact bats and high end arms.  As we roll out the initial State Rankings, there is a baseline for a deep class that will only continue to get deeper as their High School Careers play out.

On Monday, we released our first installment of the 2025 rankings for the state of Texas.  Today we are going to start a deeper dive into the rankings position by position.  We will start with the middle infield.

Matthew Boughton SS / 2B / Covenant Christian academy, TX / 2025

Boughton came in at #2 in the state rankings.  The slick fielding shortstop out of Colleyville Covenant HS is a walking highlight reel in the field.  His range and anticipation for his age is plus.  He can make the play in the hole, up the middle and excels coming thru the ball.  At the plate his bat to ball skills are advanced and he continually barrels the baseball. There is a lot of projection left in the frame, and as he matures he has a chance to tap into some power.  The Texas A&M commit has all the makings of being the next in line of high end shortstops from the DFW area, and it will be fun to watch his maturation the next 3 years.

Kayson Cunningham SS / 2B / SA Johnson, TX / 2025

Next on the list, and ranked 3rd in the State, is Kayson Cunningham.  The S.A. Johnson product has the best barrel to ball skills in the state for this grade. The LHH splits time playing his age and playing up, and it doesn’t matter, because all he does is hit.  He has a short stroke, uses the whole field and towards the end of the summer and fall started to tap into his  power more. In the field, Cunningham is very reliable at short. He can make all the plays and is especially good at coming in and getting it.

Jake Fults SS / OF / Dallas Jesuit, TX / 2025

Checking in at #14 is Jake Fults from Jesuit HS in Dallas.  The Junior Futures Game participant had a great summer and keeps getting better. He is a 6.7 runner already, which should improve with some strength.  The high waisted freshman is always looking to do damage when he is in the batter's box. He shows good rhythm with a slight leg kick that allows him to get off a powerful swing with some quick hands. In the field he shows soft hands and an above avg. arm in the infield. After losing #6 overall draft pick, Jordan Lawler, Jesuit looks to have another future star at the shortstop position.
