GEORGETOWN, TX - Funny how the term “hidden gem” pops up in baseball vernacular. Considering a baseball field is often referred to as a “diamond”, and players may be called a “diamond-in-the-rough”. Travel around to enough baseball games, and for one reason or another you will start to rank certain parks, or experiences that stand out. Thursday night at Georgetown High School would be just such an experience.

For those of you that have not made the trip to Georgetown High School, it is well worth the price of admission. Not only do the Eagles have a stellar team this season, but once you combine the friendly faces, the “small town” feel, the fan-friendly bleachers, and the late-80’s rock ballads between innings, you can find yourself feeling a bit nostalgic.

The Eagles (10-5 Overall, 4-1 District) hosted the red-hot Cedar Park Timberwolves (14-2 Overall, 4-0 District) in a showdown of district rivals. Taking the mound for Cedar Park was senior right-hander Davis Blake, an Angelo State recruit, while Georgetown would counter with left-hander Justin Murphy. Besides their handedness, these two pitchers could not be more different. Blake relies on a hard fastball that touched 91 mph once, but sat mostly in the 87-89 mph. Murphy, an uncommitted senior left-hander, pitches with precision below bat speed, allowing hitters to get themselves out.

Through the first three innings, both hurlers would put up zero’s. Then, in the top of fourth, Cedar Park struck first as Josh Paramo would drive in Seth Sparks on an RBI single to left-center field. Georgetown would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Harrison Magee would walk, then steal second and third base, ultimately scoring on a throwing error. Davis Blake would get a big punch-out on a curveball to end the inning for the Timberwolves.

Georgetown would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, the first coming off the bat of junior Cole Moore, a Texas Tech recruit. Leadoff man Parker Tadlock, an Angelo State recruit, would reach on a push-bunt base hit. After a sacrifice bunt moved Tadlock into scoring position, Moore would hammer a two-strike offering deep over the right fielder’s head, scoring Tadlock. Another Angelo State recruit, Trent Baker, would follow Moore with a double of his own, driving in another run and putting the Eagles up 3-1.

But in the top of the sixth, Cedar Park would cut the lead by one, on a double by sophomore Ryan Fiala. Georgetown would answer yet again with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth as Luke Seaback reached base via a hit-by-pitch, and later scored on an infield single combined with a throwing error.

For the Eagles, Justin Murphy would get the complete game win, tossing seven innings, allowing only one earned run on six hits, no walks and one strikeout. For the Timberwolves, Davis Blake would get the loss after going five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, four walks, and four strikeouts. Final Score, Georgetown 4, Cedar Park 2.
