frisco wakeland vs. rockwall heath - 03.11.17

The Frisco Wakeland Wolverines have had an outstanding start to the 2017 season. This weekend was no different, as they went 6-0, improving to 15-2-1 overall.

Wakeland would take on a very strong Rockwall Heath team in the championship game at Frisco Dr. Pepper Ballpark. The Wolverines would get off to a hot start by hanging a four-spot on the board in the first inning, sending nine guys to the plate. Wakeland banged out four hits in the inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Luke Scaggs.

Rockwall Heath would answer right back, with one run in the top of the second inning, and two more in the third, bringing the Hawks to within one. Starting pitcher for Wakeland, Zach Hurtt, would be lifted in the third inning, giving way for right-hander Cole Magel, who would go the rest of the way for the Wolverines.

Wakeland would score two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, and reliever Cole Magel shut the door for the Wolverines, earning the save. The Hawks would have chances to score runs, as they walked seven times and had four hits, but they left eight men stranded on base.

Wakeland would get two hits a piece from Thompson, Martin and Gallup, with Wyatt Marr having their only extra base hit, a triple to right-center field. Final score, Wakeland 6, Heath 3.

rockwall heath vs. frisco reedy - 03.11.17

Earlier in the day, an experienced Rockwall Heath team would take on a young Frisco Reedy club. Reedy High School is a new school, so there are no seniors on their roster, and that can make it tough when playing a team like Rockwall Heath, who has six seniors in their lineup.

Freshman hurler Clay Finnegan would take the mound for Heath, with a veteran lineup behind him. Finnegan would go five complete innings, scattering eight hits and allowing two runs with one strikeout. But the most important stat of the day for the young Finnegan (besides the 12 runs his offense scored), was no free passes. The right-hander filled up the zone and was able to work through a couple of jams by inducing two double plays.

Rockwall Heath would get on the board early, as Canaan Smith drove in leadoff man Cody Cleveland with a single through the right side. The Hawks offense would not stop there, as they proceeded to score in each of the next four innings. Up and down the order for Heath was offensive production, including multiple hits by Cleveland, Smith, and Thurman, while Cole Stilwell provided an RBI in all three of his at bats. The game ended in the fifth inning, with Rockwall Heath defeating Frisco Reedy 12-2.

Coach Cox’s Reedy Lions may be young, but they are talented. All over the field are young players with projectable tools. The Lions were led offensively by juniors Luke DeLapaz, Dylan Durham, and Will McDuffee; each recording two hits. With the loss to Heath, the Lions record only falls to 13-5, but look for big things from this young team as they have a stable of junior arms that should help them navigate a very competitive district.
