West Texas Insider

EL PASO, TX- With the rest of the state of Texas receiving rain throughout the weekend, we headed out west to cover a few district games in district 1-6A. With the top four teams in Franklin, Socorro, Americas, and Montwood all being within a couple games of each other for the top spot it made for a competitive weekend in the El Paso area.

El Paso Socorro 7, El Paso Franklin 4

Franklin had Grayson JC signee RHP Mitch Stone on the mound, and early on was very effective keeping a Socorro team relatively quiet until his exit in the third. After the exit of Stone in the third Socorro would strike for a total of five runs that would come on two opposite field homeruns from senior SS/RHH Jonathan Rios and 3B/RHH Kevin Garcia who would combine for a total of five RBI and untimely securing the victory for Socorro.

El Paso Montwood 14, El Paso Americas 13

Initially a dominated game by Montwood in the early innings, striking for six runs in the first that came from defensive miscues and a big three-run RBI double from senior Alex De La Rosa. Montwood would lean on sophomore LHP Jesus Tovar who kept a talented Americas lineup quiet through the early innings, until his exit in the fifth. Americas would battle back with a couple of RBI triples from New Mexico JC signee 2B Erick Martinez and a clutch two-run RBI triple from sophomore CF Alvaro Hernandez to give Americas a 13-12 lead in the top-half of the seventh. A leadoff double from junior 3B Jesus Campa would put a runner in scoring position for Montwood, Campa would later score on an RBI single from LF Aaron Oropeza to tie the game at 13. Senior 3B/1B Elias Robles would be the hero in this one after an RBI single would squeeze past a squeezed infield to secure the 14-13 victory for Montwood.

SCOUT NOTES

Darell Hernaiz, SS, 2019, Americas

Texas Tech commit, Hernaiz currently ranked No. 54 in 2019 PBR class rankings. Handful of scouts were on hand to see the confident 6-foot, 170-pound athletic framed SS. Hernaiz possess high-ceiling tools, and intangibles to be success full at the next level, one of the premier SS in the area. Defensively, he has quick feet, with smooth actions, soft hands, with + arm strength. The right-handed hitter had a 2-for-3 day with a couple of hard-hit singles, has projectable power, uses an athletic leg kick, accelerates the barrel through contact, ball jumps off the bat with backspin carry, consistent hard contact, aggressive lower-half, with above-average bat speed. Came into work in relief on the mound with a FB up to 84.
