DALLAS, TX -  On Sunday Januaryy 15th, the PBR TX staff traveled to Lake Dallas High school to host the Dallas Preseason ID. The event consisted of players from all high school classes participating in a pro style workout. They started by running a 60, using swift performance timing gates, then moved into the defensive workout. The day was capped off with a round of batting practice followed by pitchers throwing bullpens. Today, we take a look at some of the standouts on the day.

Upperclassmen

Brady Coe SS / RHP / Allen, TX / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 76 / POS: 12 Having Coe at an event is always a pleasure, as there aren’t many competitors better than him in the state.  He is a winner and can do a lot of things on the field well. At the plate, Coe has good plate discipline and does a good job of getting himself into positive counts.  He has gotten stronger and hit multiple balls out during BP.  Defensively, Coe has a + arm from the left side of the infield, and had an event best of 92 across the diamond.  He has a good glove and could play all 3 infield positions.  His instincts help his range play up.  He can also hop on the mound and deliver a high 80’s fastball and fill up the strike zone. He mixes in a slider and a change up also, that he commands well.   He has an aggressive disposition on the mound and wants the ball in the big moment.  The ACU commit is a ballplayer and is looking to lead the Allen Eagles to a big Spring.

Drew Devillier RHP / OF / Plano East, TX / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 53 / POS: 15 I was excited to get an up close look at Devillier. The TCU commit has good size at 6’5 210 and a lot of tools to go with it.  The RHP/OF/QB1 has a loud tool set that he showed off on Sunday. He ran a 6.98 60 in less than ideal conditions and then threw 88 from the OF.  On the mound, Devillier’s fastball got up to 88 and will continue to climb as we get into the spring. He spun some good sliders as well. When he got out front and stayed on top, it showed good depth and quality shape in the mid 70’s.  At the plate, Devillier is a switch hitter and had a loud round of bp from both sides of the plate. He starts tall, and as he loads gets into his legs and uses his length to leverage the baseball. He had a max exit velocity of 96 and hit multiple balls out from both sides with his farthest coming in at 369 ft.  Devillier plays QB at the 6A level, so he has a lot on his plate, but the upside is tremendous.

Kade Davis LHP / OF / Cedar Park, TX / 2024 One of the guys that I was most excited to see was Davis.  I’ve heard good things about the LHP from the Cedar Park area. The 6’1 Jr. worked with good tempo and pace in his delivery but wasn’t in a rush. His arm path was clean and he repeated it well with his full arsenal of pitches. He was consistently 84-86 with command to both sides of the plate. He mixed in a curveball that he threw in the 68-72 range. He had a good feel for it, being able to drop it in for a strike or trying to bury it at the back of the plate.  As he continues to get stronger and throws it with more power, it will continue to improve.  His changeup was his best secondary on this day.  He threw it with good conviction and the same arm speed as his fastball. He threw it in the mid 70’s and lived on the outer half with the pitch.  Davis also swung the bat well, registering 92 max exit velo and consistently barreling the baseball. Davis is going to be one of the hot names coming out of the CenTex area this Spring.

Jace Patton SS / 3B / Frisco Centennial, TX / 2024 Patton has made some big jumps since I last saw him in the summer.  He looked more physical and his numbers improved across the board.  He was smooth in the infield work, showing good footwork and soft hands. He was 87 across the infield, showing the arm strength needed to stay on the left side of the infield. At the plate, Patton looked more confident and physical in the box. He produced a max exit velocity of 96.3 and the ability to drive the ball to the gaps with authority.  There is still some physical projection there, and plenty of strength to be gained. Patton continues to get better, and will be fun to watch this spring/summer.

Jake Overstreet C / 3B / Rockwall, TX / 2024 The C/3B had a standout day on Sunday. He is another one that improved all his numbers across the board.  He showed high level defensive skills behind the plate during the workout and while receiving his pens.  He is a strong kid that can really receive, and moves well enough to block everything and keep it close to him.  He showed good footwork and an above avg. arm that produced 1.99-2.00 pop times. He also showed that he is capable at 3rd with solid actions and was 86 across the diamond. Overstreet was really impressive during bp.  He is a strong kid that also possesses + bat speed.  He hit multiple balls out and produced mid 90’s exit velocities. Overstreet is part of a loaded Rockwall team, and we are excited to see him and the Yellowjackets this spring.

Mason Hamilton 3B / C / Gracewood Academy, TX / 2024 Hamilton had some of the loudest BP of the Preseason ID circuit in Texas. The Jr. from the Gracewood Academy hit the farthest ball on Trackman during these 6 events.  He hit a ball 399 ft. with 99.6 exit velo.  It wasn’t just that one swing though, he was consistently in the mid 90’s and hit multiple balls out.  He uses a stronger lower half to go with good bat speed to really impact the baseball.  He Can play 3rd or Catch, and has good arm strength as he was 86 across the infield. We have had him as low as 2.04 in his pop times in the past as well.  Hamilton had a really good day, and we will be circling back this spring to see him in game action.

Caden Young C / 3B / Allen, TX / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 132 / POS: 15 Young is one of the better defensive catchers in the state. The Jr. from Allen HS takes a lot of pride in his work behind the plate and it shows in all aspects back there. He is a quiet receiver of the baseball and does a good job of getting underneath the low pitch.  He can really block and is good at moving laterally back there.  He has good feet and an elite transfer that allowed him to register an event best 1.94 pop time. He is an accurate thrower and should help eliminate the running game.  Young also took a big step offensively. He was more square and fluid in his stance and it allowed him to get the barrel out and really unlock some pull side power.  He hit multiple balls out and he showed above average bat speed. Young continues to raise his stock, and I expect him to receive plenty of attention as the spring gets going.

Nick Bowman RHP / OF / Rains ISD, TX / 2024 Bowman was one that I didn’t know much about coming into this weekend, and he turned in one of the most complete workouts out of any of our Preseason ID’s.  The Jr. from Rains HS, out in East Texas, started his day by running a 6.9 60 in less than ideal conditions. He followed that up by taking down the top OF velo at the event. He registered 91 and every throw was on the bag.   During BP, his athleticism kept showing up. He has a lot of quick twitch, helping him produce + blast numbers.  He has a max bat speed of 76.1 mph and really good rotational acceleration. He produced a max exit velo of 96.2 and that is while trying to stay in the big part of the field.  There is some rawness to the swing, but he has the athleticism to get the barrel to the ball. To end his day, Bowman hopped on the mound and showed legitimate two way ability with a quick arm that helped him get up to 87 mph. It is an uptempo delivery and when he separates he generates a lot of arm speed. He flashed a low 70’s breaking ball that was inconsistent but the shape and spin were there. As he gets more power behind it, it has a chance to be a + pitch. He also threw an upper 70’s change that he threw with good arm speed, just needs to keep working on the command of it. Bowman had a great day, and Rains HS is on my list to follow up with him this spring.

Zachary Pearrow OF / LHP / Waxahachie, TX / 2024 Pearrow is a gamer, and he has made some jumps since he stood out at the Texas State Games this fall. The two way Lefty from Waxahachie does everything well and is a guy that helps your team win.  He looked good during defense, being able to handle either corner OF spot and showing a quality arm, throwing 86 from the OF.  He can also pick it at 1st and shows really good feet around the bag.  Offensively, the lefty bats Right.  He produced mid 90’s exit velo’s and drove a few balls out of the yard. He starts slightly open and has some loft to his swing.  Pearrow is also a quality LHP on the mound. His velo ticked up a bit since the fall and he was up to 84 with repeatable mechanics and a clean arm. He showed a really good feel for his mid 70’s changeup, filling the zone with it.  I thought his curveball really stood out. He throws it with intensity and it has good downward action on it.  He has consistent shape on it, and will get righties and lefties out.  Pearrow does a lot of good things on the mound, and I am excited to get out to Richards Ballpark in Waxahachie and watch him this spring.

Donnie Edgar RHP / OF / Saginaw, TX / 2024 Another arm that really caught my attention was Edgar, a Jr. from Saginaw. The 6’ RHP showed good athleticism on the mound with a quick arm. He is a good mover down the mound and he showed repeatable mechanics. He threw from a high ¾ slot and produced a fastball that was 84-85.  He has tons of room to fill out, so if he continues to get stronger, the velo will continue to rise.  Edgar had a good feel for all of his secondary offerings.  He threw a good curveball that was more north to south in the low 70’s and then a mid 70’s slider that had a distinctly different shape and had a little tighter, shorter break. To round out his arsenal, Edgar threw a quality changeup that played well off the fastball. It was an upper 70’s pitch that has some ASR and will be  effective against LHH’s. It was my 1st time seeing Edgar, but I am excited to go see him this spring, and if he continues to get stronger his stock will continue to jump.

Jaxson Jester OF / LHP / Pottsboro , TX / 2024 Another player that showed up that has made significant gains is Jester. The Jr. lefty two way looked more physical and it showed in his day. He has plus bat speed that topped out at 76.1 mph. He has good balance throughout his swing with a slight leg kick to get it going. He stayed in the big part of the field and showed good gap power.  There is another tick in power once he starts turning on the ball a little more.  His barrel stays in the zone for a long time and he should rack up a lot of hits at Pottsboro this year. Jester can handle 1st or either corner OF spot as he takes good angles and has good feet.  Jester is also a quality arm from the left side, and we will be out this spring to see him and the rest of Pottsboro as they look to make another deep run.

Garrett Hayes OF / SS / Whitehouse , TX / 2024 Another player who I hadn’t seen in person is Hayes, and he is another quality athlete from Whitehouse that has some loud tools. He is a good runner, clocking a 6.72 giving him a chance to stick in Center.  He looked comfortable in the OF and showed a quality arm at 84 MPH.  At the plate, Hayes put up some really quality numbers.  He showed above average in all his blast numbers and hit multiple balls out against a strong crosswind.  He had the highest avg. exit velocity at 92.4 showing consistent hard contact.  There is some length in the swing, but his athleticism and twitch allows him to get the barrel to the ball. Hayes is part of a really athletic Whitehouse team that should make some noise in East Texas this year.
