Canyon vs. Monterey
April 28, 2019
LUBBOCK, Texas- Monterey (16-11, 11-4) hosted 3-4A district champions Canyon (17-9, 7-1) Wednesday evening at Moegle Field for a late season non-district matchup.
Monterey is a ball club that has already clinched a playoff berth and is currently sitting in second place in district 3-5A with the chance at a district championship with an Amarillo loss Friday evening against Lubbock High. Monterey is not a super flashy team but is a team that will not make many mistakes, rely on solid fundamentals, and reliable coaching in Coach Kent Meador. Canyon is fresh off receiving a district championship, after only one district loss and running through their district schedule with ease. With depth that would be competitive at any level, Canyon can be expected to make a deep run in this year’s state playoffs.
Early on it had the feeling of being all Monterey, with Monterey striking for four runs in the bottom of the first. Senior CF Briley Alexander (Air Force Football signee) would lead things off for the Plainsman with a hard-hit single, who would later score on a two-run RBI single from RF Bobby Roberts. Monterey would add two more in the inning with RBI’s from 3B Nate Davila and SS Jose Alaniz.
After a slow start Canyon would take over after two big innings in the fifth and seventh. Starting in fifth, Canyon would push across a whopping seven runs on a big-time three-run home run from senior 1B Zane Sparks (Ranger JC commit) that would tie the game (5-5) for the Eagles. LF Cody Brooks would come through with a clutch two-out two-run RBI triple that would give Canyon a 7-5 lead.
In the seventh, continued offensive productivity from Canyon would essentially create and unsurmountable lead, after a two-run RBI single from Sparks and an RBI double from Jonathon Peavy. The Eagles would finish off the seventh bringing in six runs and bringing in their run total to 15 and securing an impressive victory over a solid Monterey team.
Final Score: Canyon 15, Monterey 5.

SCOUT NOTES
Clay Artho, 3B, Canyon, 2020
Uncommitted. At an estimated 6-foot, 180-pounds, Artho has an athletic, muscular frame, barrel-chested, defined lower-half, with good strength in forearms/hands. One of the top players in the 2020 class the West Texas area has to offer. Offensively, starts from a balanced athletic stance, mechanically quiet and simple, short stride, fluid load, aggressive lower-half. Turned in an impressive 2-for-4 night with a 3B, and 2B, loose, athletic hands, with present bat speed, consistent hard contact, barrel stays flat through the zone, stays strong through the ball, knows how to backspin the baseball. Should develop more power as he fills into his frame, defiantly a guy college coaches would like to sooner rather than later.
