ARGYLE, TX - Now that the UIL District play has begun, that usually means that an individual can only see one game each Tuesday and Friday. However, we got lucky yesterday as the Argyle Eagles, ranked No. 14 in the Texas Power 25, hosted Crandall in a noon start on Saturday.

Taking the mound for Argyle was Angelo State commit, 2018 RHP Bryson Hudgens.

Crandall put two on in the first, thanks to a single and an HBP, but Hudgens worked out of it, jamming two Crandall hitters for weak pop ups.

The highly touted Argyle would score in 5 of 6 frames, getting on the board in the bottom of the second when 2020 3B Cade Merka singled home a run, and then 2019 OF Hayden Clearman scored on a wild pitch. 2-0 Eagles.

The Eagles would not look back after that, scoring 2 more in the third on a leadoff single from 2019 2B Preston King, who scored later on a wild pitch. Then Clearman drove in another run with a double to right field. 4-0 Eagles

In the fourth, Argyle would get a single run after having the bases loaded, 0 outs, when Preston King hit a hard one-hop ground ball to third base, scoring Merka. At first glance, it looked like it could have been a triple play, as Merka went back to third and appeared to be tagged by Crandall third baseman Cortez. The Crandall infield then proceeded to start two separate run downs between both 2nd and 3rd, and 1st and 2nd. An umpire reversed his call in audible voice and apologized out loud while the play was going on. And Merka jogged home to score the fifth run of the game. After a 10 minute delay for both umpires to discuss, they ended up getting the call right, two outs for Crandall and run scored for Argyle. 5-0 Eagles.

Hudgens cruised through five innings, and relievers Abrego and Van Poppel both threw scoreless innings to complete the shutout. Argyle would get a single run in both the fifth, and sixth innings, thanks to a Hayden Clearman bunt single and a Preston King triple. Final Score: Argyle 7, Crandall 0.
