Argyle Comes Back To Defeat Cleburne
March 18, 2019
CLEBURNE, TX - The Cleburne Yellowjackets entered last week at 12-1-2, ranked No. 13 in the Texas Power 25 Team Rankings, and racked up six wins in a row in seven days. Argyle came in at No. 2 in the Power 25 with a 14-1-1 record. This game was a no-brainer to attend as we got the chance to see 2019 LHP Willie Rangel, a Texas Tech commit, against one of the top teams in Texas.
Cleburne jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the third when the nine hole hitter Schneider singled to right field, then 2020 SS Cason Gregory reached on a SAC/Drag bunt. After another sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third, Guereca hit a hard ground ball to short that scored Schneider. Starting pitcher Willie Rangel then doubled to the left-centerfield gap, driving in two more. Cleburne 3-0.
Argyle answered with a run in the fourth when Hayden Clearman got a sac bunt down. And an inning later Dillon Carter scored a guy from third on a ground ball to second, then Brenden Dixon hit a sac fly to tie the game 3-3.
The score remained tied until the eigth when Argyle put up a two spot with two outs. Hayden Clearman doubled off the right-centerfield wall, then Austin King reached on a sacrifice bunt that hugged the first base line. Both Clearman and King moved up one base on the same play while the defense argued with the umpire. Thats when Alex Gonzales doubled to left-centerfield, scoring both King and Clearman. Argyle up 5-3.
Closer Dillon Carter got two quick outs in the eigth, but issued two two-out walks, then Preston Hewitt got his second knock of the game with an RBI single to bring Cleburne within one. But after another walk, Carter got a fly ball to end the game. Final Score: Argyle 5, Cleburne 4.
The top seven hitters in Argyle’s order each recorded a hit, with Carter, Clearman and Gonzales all picking up at least one RBI.
